2017 Washington Spirit Season
The 2017 season is Washington Spirit's fifth season, competing in the National Women's Soccer League, the top division of women's soccer in the United States. Review In the aftermath of finishing 2016 runners-up, the Spirit saw a series of key departures including captain Ali Krieger (traded to Orlando Pride), Christine Nairn and Diana Matheson (both traded to Seattle Reign), and Crystal Dunn leaving for Chelsea, while retaining her contracting rights. In addition to the departures, key injuries to Joanna Lohman, Francisca Ordega, and goalkeeper Kelsey Wys limited the Spirit's playing options. Unable to adequately replace these players, the Spirit struggled to compete throughout the 2017 season ultimately finishing last (10th) for the first time since the inaugural season. Washington Spirit
The Washington Spirit is an American professional soccer club based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area that participates in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). It is a continuation of the D.C. United Women of the W-League and continues to field both an amateur WPSL team and a youth team, both under the Spirit name. History Establishment The foundation of the National Women's Soccer League was announced on November 21, 2012, with Washington selected as a host for one of the eight teams selected for the inaugural season. Joanna Lohman
Joanna Christie Lohman (born June 26, 1982) is a retired American professional soccer midfielder/ defender who last played for the Washington Spirit of the American National Women's Soccer League. She previously played for the Washington Freedom and Philadelphia Independence. In addition, she served as the general manager of the Washington Freedom Futures, the Washington Freedom Soccer Club's W-League team. Lohman is a former member of the United States women's national soccer team and author of the book ''Raising Tomorrow's Champions: What the Women's National Soccer Team Teaches Us About Grit, Authenticity and Winning'' that was released on March 3, 2021 by Inspire Digital Media. Estefanía Romina Banini Ruiz (born 21 June 1990) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a forward for Spanish Primera División club Atlético Madrid and the Argentina women's national team. Banini has previously spent four seasons with Colo-Colo of the Chilean women's football championship, two seasons with the Spirit, and a season with Valencia. Banini was previously a member of the Argentine women's national team, captaining the team in their second ever World Cup campaign in 2019. Havana Solaun
Havana Marguerite Solaun (born 23 February 1993) is a Jamaican professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Houston Dash of the American National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) and the Jamaica women's national team. Solaun began her professional career with the NWSL's Seattle Reign FC in 2015. After two years, she was traded to the Washington Spirit. Lindsay Elizabeth Agnew (born March 31, 1995) is a Canadian retired soccer player who played as a forward for the Canada women's national soccer team and National Women's Soccer League clubs North Carolina Courage, Houston Dash, and Washington Spirit. Early life Born in Kingston, Ontario, Agnew began playing soccer at age four. Her family moved to Syracuse, New York in 2001, and moved again to Columbus, Ohio in 2006. Line Sigvardsen Jensen (born 23 August 1991) is a Danish professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for the Fortuna Hjørring in the 3F-Ligaem and for the Danish national team. Club career Sigvardsen Jensen, originally a centre back, has played for Fortuna Hjørring since October 2008. She began playing football aged 9 in her native Himmerland. Kassey Lee Kallman (born May 6, 1992) is an American professional soccer defender. She most recently played for the Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League. Early life Kassey is the daughter of Rich and Laura Kallman. She has three brothers – Brian, Brad and Brent – and two sisters – Krystle and Kylie. Brian and Brent both played college soccer at Creighton University and both played professionally in the North American Soccer League for Minnesota United before Brent joined their MLS iteration; Krystle and Kylie both played collegiately at The University of Minnesota, where Krystle currently serves as an assistant coach. Shelina Laura Zadorsky (born October 24, 1992) is a Canadian professional soccer player who plays as a centre-back for FA Women's Super League club Tottenham Hotspur and the Canada national team. Caprice Ka'anohikula Dydasco (born August 19, 1993) is an American soccer defender who plays as an right back for the Houston Dash in the National Women's Soccer League. She previously played for Pali Blues, the Washington Spirit, and Newcastle Jets. She played college soccer with the UCLA Bruins. Arielle Leah Ship (born May 2, 1995) is an American soccer player who plays as a forward for Kansas City in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She was the recipient of the California Golden Bears' first ever Pac-12 Player of the Year Award in 2015. Career Ship was drafted by Seattle Reign FC in the 2017 NWSL College Draft. Stephanie Lynn Marie Labbé (born October 10, 1986) is a Canadian retired professional soccer player who played as a goalkeeper. She won a bronze medal with Canada at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the NWSL Championship with the Courage in 2019, and a gold medal with Canada at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
