2017 Vancouver International Film Festival
The 2017 Vancouver International Film Festival, the 36th event in the history of the Vancouver International Film Festival, was held from September 28 to October 13, 2017. The festival's opening gala film was Mina Shum's '' Meditation Park'', and its closing gala was Todd Haynes's '' Wonderstruck''; during the festival, a special gala was also dedicated to Guy Maddin's film ''The Green Fog'', with its score performed live in the theatre by the Kronos Quartet. Meditation Park
''Meditation Park'' is a 2017 Canadian drama film directed by Mina Shum. The film opened the 2017 Vancouver International Film Festival and was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. Following in the footsteps of her previous work like Double Happiness, ''Meditation Park'' highlights director Shum's Chinese ancestry. Notably, the film highlights stars Sandra Oh and Don McKellar. Shum's ''Meditation Park'' questions traditional gender roles and reveals difficulties associated with the immigrant experience. Hugh Welchman
Hugh Stewart Jasper Welchman (born February 1975) is a British filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer. Life and career Welchman comes from Bracknell in Berkshire and attended the Dolphin School in nearby Hurst until moving on to Keble College, Oxford during the 1990s and graduated with a degree from Oxford University in Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE). In 2002, Welchman founded the film company BreakThru Films. This led to him becoming the joint winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2007. Wayne Wapeemukwa
Wayne Wapeemukwa is a Canadian film director and screenwriter of Métis descent from Vancouver, British Columbia. He is most noted for his feature film debut ''Luk'Luk'I'' (2017), which won the Toronto International Film Festival Award for Best Canadian First Feature Film at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and the Directors Guild of Canada's Discovery Award. Education and filmmaking Wapeemukwa participated in his high-school film program and has been influenced and inspired, since childhood, by Chelsea McMullan. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts, bachelor's degree and is pursuing a Master's degree in Philosophy and psychoanalysis at the New School for Social Research. ''Luk'Luk'I'' (pronounced "lucklucky") is a Canadian drama film, which premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. The feature directorial debut of Wayne Wapeemukwa, the film is an expansion of his earlier short film ''Luk'Luk'I: Mother'', which premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. Set in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics, the film centres on five residents of the poverty-stricken neighbourhood. The cast includes Angel Gates, Joe Buffalo, Ken Harrower, Eric Buurman and Angela Dawson. Phillip Barker (born 1955) is a Canadian production designer, filmmaker and visual artist based in Toronto, Ontario. He is best known for his work as a production designer, particularly his work with director Atom Egoyan, which includes ten feature films and two live operas. Cory Bowles (born August 27, 1973) is a Canadian actor, director and choreographer. He is best known for his portrayal of Cory in the series ''Trailer Park Boys''. Life and career Bowles was born in Montreal, Quebec and raised in Truro, Nova Scotia.
