United States Swimming National Championships
The United States Swimming National Championships (a.k.a. "Nationals") are held annually, in summer. The event is organized by USA Swimming, and is held in a long course (50m) pool. In the past, and as recently as 2007, there were 2 meets annually: and Spring and Summer Nationals. The Spring meet began as a 25-yard (short course) meet, while the Summer meet was long course. Prior to USA Swimming's creation in the late 1970s, the meet was run by the AAU. Phillips 66 began sponsoring the meet in 1973, which continues through today although the branding of the sponsorship changed to ConocoPhillips in the early 2000s. This is one of the longest sponsorships in U.S. sports. Jacob Pebley (born September 17, 1993) is an American competition swimmer who specializes in the backstroke. He will be representing DC Trident in the International Swimming League during the 2020 season. In college, he was an NCAA runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke. Pebley won the 200-meter backstroke at the 2015 Summer Universiade. Joseph "Gunnar" Bentz (born January 3, 1996) is an American former competitive swimmer and Olympic gold medalist. Early life Bentz graduated from St. Pius X Catholic High School in 2014. Career He is a four-time medalist (two gold, two bronze) at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships and a two-time medalist (one silver, one bronze) at the Pan American Games. Bentz competes for the University of Georgia with the Georgia Bulldogs swimming and diving team in American collegiate swimming. Bentz was the 2015 USA National Champion in the 400m Individual Medley. In June 2016, he qualified for the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Jay Litherland (born August 24, 1995) is an American competition swimmer of both Japanese and New Zealand descent. He represents DC Trident which is part of the International Swimming League. He won the silver medal in the Men's 400 Individual Medley at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in a time of 4:10.28. He was a World University Games gold medalist at the 2015 Summer Universiade and a bronze medalist at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships. Timothy Phillips (born November 30, 1990) is an American competition swimmer. He swam for the Ohio State Buckeyes, earning numerous All-Big Ten and All-America honors. Swimming career At the 2010 FINA Short Course World Championships in Dubai, Phillips placed 21st in the 50 m butterfly with a time of 23.47 in qualifying and 14th in the 100 m butterfly with a semifinal time of 51.50.
