2017 UCI Track Cycling World Championships – Men's Sprint
The Men's sprint event of the 2017 UCI Track Cycling World Championships was held on 14 and 15 April 2017. Results Qualifying The top four riders advanced directly to the 1/8 finals; places 5 to 28 advanced to the 1/16 final. * Q = qualified directly for 1/8 finals * q = qualified for 1/16 finals 1/16 finals Heat winners advanced to the 1/8 finals. 1/8 finals Heat winners advanced to the quarterfinals. Quarterfinals Matches were extended to a best-of-three format hereon; winners proceeded to the semifinals. * Max Niederlag and Matthew Glaetzer were relegated "for irregular movement to prevent his opponent from passing" Semifinals Winners proceeded to the gold medal final; losers proceeded to the bronze medal final. Hong Kong Velodrome
Hong Kong Velodrome is a velodrome in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong. It has a 250-metre cycling track and spectator facilities for 3,000 people. It opened on 30 December 2013 next to the Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground. History The Hong Kong government agreed to build the velodrome after Wong Kam-po won the gold medal for the men's road race in the 2006 Asian Games at Doha, amid concerns that athletes who represent Hong Kong had to rely on training facilities in China. Construction of the HK$1.1 billion venue got the legislative go-ahead in January 2010 and work began two months later. On 5 November 2012, Chief Secretary Carrie Lam kicked off construction of the Tseung Kwan O Velodrome, as it was then known. The velodrome occupies 6.6 hectares, and cycling helmets inspired its wavy rooftop design. Mrs Lam officiated at the ceremony marking the start of construction. Vasilijus Lendel
Vasilijus Lendel (born 9 April 1995) is a Lithuanian male track cyclist, representing Lithuania at international competitions. He competed at the 2014 UEC European Track Championships and 2015 UEC European Track Championships in the sprint and keirin event. He won the silver medal at the 2016–17 UCI Track Cycling World Cup, Round 1 in Glasgow in the keirin. Career In 2020 Lendel was awarded Lithuanian Cycling Federation title for Lithuanian male cyclist of the year. In 2021 Lendel won the title of Lithuanian male cyclist of the year again. Theo Bos (born 22 August 1983) is a Dutch former professional road and track cyclist. An Olympic silver medalist and five-time world champion, he is the brother of Olympic medalist in speed skating Jan Bos. On 29 November 2021, he announced his retirement of the professional cycling sport and took up the job of national track coach of the Chinese national track team. Azizulhasni Awang
Dato' Muhammad Azizulhasni bin Awang (born 5 January 1988) is a Malaysian professional track cyclist. Nicknamed "The Pocket Rocketman" due to his small stature, he is the first and the only Malaysian cyclist to win a medal at the Summer Olympics. Azizulhasni was Team Malaysia's national flag bearer at the 2008 Summer Olympics Parade of Nations. He won his first World Championship medal in 2009, a silver in the individual sprint. His debut Olympic medal came at the 2016 Summer Olympics, a bronze in the individual keirin. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he won a silver medal in the same category of individual keirin. Jaïr Tjon En Fa (born 19 October 1993) is a Surinamese male track cyclist. He began cycling at the age of 13 in 2007 in his home country of Suriname. He competed in the sprint event at the 2013 UCI Track Cycling World Championships and also at the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships – Men's sprint where he reached the 1/16th Final. Pavel Kelemen (born 28 May 1991) is a Czech racing cyclist who currently rides for UCI Continental team . In 2011 Pavel Kelemen was part of the Czech team sprint team at the European Championships in Apeldoorn, together with Denis Špička and Filip Ditzel. The team finished in 8th. In 2012, Kelemen was nominated by his federation to take part in the London Olympics for the Men's sprint competition. Eddie Dawkins
Edward James Dawkins (born 11 July 1989) is a New Zealand track cyclist. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games he won the silver medal in the men's sprint and the bronze medal in the men's 1 kilometre time trial. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, he won the bronze medal in the men's sprint, and was part of the New Zealand time that won the gold medal in the team sprint, with Ethan Mitchell and Sam Webster. The team sprint team set two Commonwealth Games records along the way. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he won alongside Sam Webster and Ethan Mitchell a silver medal in the team sprint, but did not go beyond the round 1 repechage in the individual sprint.
