The 2017 Nova Scotia general election was held on May 30, 2017, to elect members to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. The Liberals under Premier Stephen McNeil won re-election with a somewhat reduced majority, falling from 34 seats at dissolution to 27 seats. The Nova Scotia Liberal Party is a centrist provincial political party in Nova Scotia, Canada and the provincial section of the Liberal Party of Canada. The party currently forms the Official Opposition in Nova Scotia, under the leadership of Zach Churchill. The party was in power most recently from the 2013 election until the 2021 election. Origins The party is descended from the pre-Confederation Reformers in Nova Scotia who coalesced around Joseph Howe demanding the institution of responsible government. The Liberals (Reformers) formed several governments in the colony between 1848 and 1867. The party split during the debate on Confederation, with Howe and most other Liberals forming an Anti-Confederation Party, while supporters of confederation joined Tory Charles Tupper's Confederation Party. Allan Rowe
Allan Rowe (October 16, 1956 – March 16, 2015) was a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in the 2013 provincial election. A member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party, he represented the electoral district of Dartmouth South. Personal life Rowe was born in Hamilton, Ontario. He attended McMaster University and, later Memorial University. Rowe lived most of his adult life on the East Coast, following his professional career. He was admitted to hospital in late February 2015, after suffering an aneurysm while shovelling. He died on March 16, 2015 at the age of 58, leaving his seat in the legislature vacant. Career Prior to his election to the legislature, Rowe was a longtime television news anchor on CJON-DT, CJCH-TV, ASN and CIHF-TV.

Dartmouth South
Dartmouth South is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. The riding is currently represented by Claudia Chender of the NDP. The district was created in 1966, under the name Dartmouth City South, when Halifax County Dartmouth was divided into two electoral districts. In 1967, the district was renamed Dartmouth South. In 2003, the district was renamed Dartmouth South – Portland Valley. Chuck Porter (politician)
Garnet Charles "Chuck" Porter (born December 29, 1964) is a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Hants West in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly as a Liberal from 2006 until his retirement from politics in 2021. Before politics Porter was a paramedic for 17 years and also served as a Councillor in the town of Windsor, Nova Scotia. Political career Elected in 2006, Porter was a member of the Progressive Conservatives until June 13, 2014, when he left the party to sit as an independent citing leadership as a factor in his decision. On February 17, 2016, Porter joined the Liberal caucus. Porter was re-elected in the 2017 election. Maureen MacDonald
Maureen MacDonald (born 1954) is a Canadian academic and politician. She represented the riding of Halifax Needham in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1998 to 2016. She served as the interim leader of the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party from November 23, 2013 to February 27, 2016. Early life and career A native of Antigonish, MacDonald graduated in 1979 with a MSW from the Maritime School of Social Work at Dalhousie University. She was employed as a social worker at the Nova Scotia Hospital (Adolescent Services) and later was a faculty member at her alma mater where she taught social policy and community development. Darrell Dexter
Darrell Elvin Dexter (born 1957) is a Canadian lawyer, journalist and former naval officer who served as the 27th premier of Nova Scotia from 2009 to 2013. A member of the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party, he served as party leader from 2001 to 2013. He became Premier in 2009 after his party defeated the governing Progressive Conservative Party, leading the first NDP government in Atlantic Canada and the second east of Manitoba.
