2017 National Rugby Championship
The 2017 National Rugby Championship was the fourth season of Australia's National Rugby Championship. It involved nine professional rugby union teams, one more than the previous year, with eight teams from Australia and one team from Fiji. The two leading teams in the regular season, and , went on to play in the championship final. The deciding match, played at Viking Park in Canberra, was won 42–28 by Queensland Country to claim their first NRC title. Teams A major change made for the 2017 season was the inclusion of the Fijian Drua in the competition. Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama met with the Australian Rugby Union, and World Rugby earlier in the year about establishing a pathway for developing Fijian rugby players. Julian Huxley (rugby Union)
Julian Huxley (born 3 August 1979) is an Australian rugby union professional footballer. In 2008 he had established himself in the Wallabies and was named Australian Rookie of the Year. In 2011 he played for the Melbourne Rebels in the Super Rugby competition. Early life Huxley played for a Lindfield club in his youth, and was educated at the St Ives prep school of Sydney Grammar School and The King's School, Sydney and went on to play for the Gordon and Sydney University clubs. Huxley has previously appeared for the under-19, under-21 and 'A' Australia sides, he also played for the Australian sevens. Sydney Rays
Sydney is an Australian rugby union team that competes in the National Rugby Championship (NRC). Formerly known as Sydney Rays, the team is one of two sides from New South Wales in the competition; the other being the NSW Country Eagles. The current team plays as the all-of-Sydney side in the NRC and wears the traditional blue and yellow colours of Sydney's representative rugby teams. It draws on the metropolitan sides that have represented the city for more than a century. Jed Holloway
Jed Holloway (born 2 November 1992) is an Australian professional rugby union footballer. He currently plays for NSW Country Eagles, and the Wallabies (the Australian national team). His usual playing positions are number 8, flanker or lock. Early life Holloway was born in Wollongong, where he first played junior rugby with the Woonona Shamrocks club. His family moved to Yamba in northern New South Wales when he was nine years of age. He attended McAuley Catholic College and he joined the Yamba Buccaneers junior rugby club. Holloway later attended Waverley College in Sydney and was selected for the Australian Schoolboys side in 2010. John Manenti
John Manenti (born 1972) is an Australian rugby union coach. He is currently head coach of the Australian sevens team. Career As a rugby player, Manenti was a prop for Sydney clubs Western Suburbs and Sydney University in the 1990s. Manenti and Sydney University's former head coach Chris Malone are brothers-in-law. He coached the Wallaroos at the 2010 Women's Rugby World Cup in England, where team won the bronze medal defeating 22–8 in the third place match. He was head coach at Eastwood for their three Shute Shield victories in 2011, 2014 and 2015, and also won the Australian Club Championship with Eastwood in 2015. Greater Sydney Rams
The Greater Sydney Rams, originally known as the Western Sydney Rams, is a former rugby union team from Australia that was disbanded in 2018. The Rams won the minor premiership in the 2007 Australian Rugby Championship (ARC), and then competed in the National Rugby Championship (NRC) from 2014 to 2017. The Greater Sydney Rams team in the NRC took its identity from the Rams side that was founded in 2007. Australia's national competition was discontinued following the first season in 2007 but, after an absence of six years, the ARC was relaunched as the NRC in 2014. The revived Rams team for 2014 was backed by a syndicate of private investors in partnership with four Sydney rugby clubs; Parramatta, Penrith, Southern Districts and West Harbour. Paddy Ryan (rugby Union, Born 1988)
Paddy Ryan (born 9 August 1988) is an Australian rugby union player who plays as a tight-head prop. Ryan played eight seasons for the New South Wales Waratahs, where he surpassed one hundred caps in Super Rugby. He was also capped for the Australian national team. Early life Ryan was born and raised in Tamworth in northern New South Wales. Darren Coleman
Darren Coleman (born 1973) is an Australian professional rugby union coach. He is currently head coach of the New South Wales Waratahs. Family and early life Coleman grew up in Kempsey on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, where he played rugby for the Kempsey Cannonballs team, before moving south to play in the Sydney club rugby competition. His younger brother Scott Coleman also became a professional rugby coach, appointed to Italian club Benevento in 2013. New South Wales Country Eagles
The New South Wales Country Eagles is an Australian rugby union football team competes in the National Rugby Championship (NRC). The team was founded by a group of patrons associated with country rugby in New South Wales. The Eagles team plays home matches in regional centres of New South Wales including Armidale, Goulburn, Orange, and Tamworth. Name and colours The Country Eagles are named for the wedge-tailed eagle, the largest bird of prey found in Australia. The team logo features a wedge-tailed eagle and, as the bird's feathers are mainly black with deep golden coloured highlights on the neck and wings, black and gold were adopted as the team's original colours. Thomas Cusack (born 1 March 1993) is an Australian professional rugby union player who plays as a flanker for the , as well as serving as vice-captain in Super Rugby. Tim Sampson
Tim Sampson (born 23 May 1976) is an Australian professional rugby union football coach. He is currently an assistant coach of the Melbourne Rebels team that plays in the Super Rugby Pacific competition, and was previously the head coach of the Western Force. As a player, Sampson represented Queensland and won two premierships with Sunnybank in Brisbane playing as a fly-half or inside centre.
