2017 MLS Re-Entry Draft
The 2017 MLS Re-Entry Draft took place on December 15, 2017 (Stage 1) and December 21, 2017 (Stage 2). All 23 Major League Soccer clubs were eligible to participate. The priority order for the MLS Re-Entry Draft was reverse order of finish in 2017, taking into account playoff performance. The 2018 expansion team, Los Angeles FC, had selection 23. Available to all teams in Stage 1 of the Re-Entry draft were: * Players not eligible for free agency who were at least 23 years old in 2017 with a minimum of three years of MLS experience. * Players not eligible for free agency who did not receive a bona fide offer and who were at least 25 years old with a minimum of four years of MLS experience, or were at least 30 years old with a minimum of eight years of MLS experience. MLS Re-Entry Draft
The MLS Re-Entry Draft is an annual event in which Major League Soccer teams select players who are out of contract or have had their options declined by their current teams. Although the single-entity league does not have true free agency, the re-entry draft was created to provide an outlet of internal movement for veteran players. History The Re-Entry Draft was created by the collective bargaining agreement reached in March 2010. Under the previous rules, clubs could hold what amounted to a 48-hour first right of refusal on players whose contracts had expired or did not have the options picked up. This was a significant obstacle to a new agreement during negotiations during the 2009-10 MLS offseason. John Berner
John Berner (born February 14, 1991) is an American professional soccer player who is currently the goalkeeping coach for Huntsville City of MLS Next Pro. Career Born in St. Louis, Missouri, after playing for four years with the SIU Edwardsville Cougars, Berner was selected as the 35th overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids. He then made his professional debut for the Rapids in Major League Soccer on March 15, 2014 against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. In January 2020, Berner signed with his hometown club, Saint Louis FC of the USL Championship. Saint Louis FC folded following the 2020 USL Championship season. In March 2021, Berner joined Memphis 901 FC ahead of the 2021 season. Berner played every minute in goal for Memphis until a ruptured right Achilles tendon ended his season in June. Maurice Edu
Maurice Edu (born April 18, 1986) is an American former professional soccer player. A highly touted prospect, Edu was the first overall pick in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft and won the MLS Rookie of the Year Award with Toronto. His performances for Toronto earned him international call ups to the United States national team and the attention of clubs in Europe. He signed with Rangers, winning the Scottish Premier League three times. Following Rangers' financial problems, he joined Stoke City; however, failing to make an impact, he spent time on loan with Turkey's Bursaspor before returning to MLS with Philadelphia Union. Kevin Doyle
Kevin Edward Doyle (born 18 September 1983) is an Irish former professional footballer who played as a forward. He played for Wexford F.C. (formerly Wexford Youths), St Patrick's Athletic, and Cork City in his homeland before he moved to English side Reading. He was part of Reading's record-breaking promotion to the Premier League in 2006. Patrick Doody
Patrick Doody (born April 22, 1992) is a retired American soccer player who last played for the Chicago Fire in the MLS. Career Youth College Doody was a member of the Chicago Fire Academy for three seasons before spending his college career at Indiana University. He made a total of 86 appearances for the Hoosiers and tallied six goals and 12 assists, helping lead them to a College Cup title in 2012. Charlie Davies
Charles Desmond Davies (born June 25, 1986) is an American former professional soccer player who played as a forward. Davies set several soccer records at his high school, the Brooks School, before appearing for the Boston College Eagles and the Westchester Flames in college. Davies signed his first professional contract with Swedish Allsvenskan club Hammarby IF in December 2006 before joining Sochaux in July 2009. Cordell Cato
Cordell Cato (born July 15, 1992) is a Trinidadian footballer who last played for Oklahoma City Energy FC in the USL Championship. Career On January 17, 2012 it was announced that Cato had signed with Seattle Sounders. After making 8 competitive appearances in one season, the Sounders declined to pick up a contract option on Cato. Cato's MLS rights were traded to the San Jose Earthquakes on March 1, 2013. Cato's time with the Earthquakes came to an end when his contract expired on December 31, 2017. Deshorn Dwayne Brown (born 22 December 1990), is a Jamaican professional footballer who plays as a forward for USL Championship club Sacramento Republic.
