2017 Louis Vuitton Cup
The 2017 Louis Vuitton Challenger's Trophy (officially, the Trophy was given to the winner of the 2017 Louis Vuitton America's Cup Challenger Playoffs) was a sailing competition held to determine the challenger in the 2017 America's Cup. The tournament was an expansion of the previous Louis Vuitton Cup format, with the defender competing in the first round robin stage. The races ran from 5 to 12 June 2017 in Bermuda and were preceded by the 2015–16 America's Cup World Series. It was won by Emirates Team New Zealand who defeated Artemis Racing in the final. The races were conducted using AC50 yachts, a new class of hydrofoiling wingsail catamarans, larger than the AC45F yachts used in the world series and smaller than the AC72 yachts used in 2013. Emirates Team New Zealand went on to compete with defending champions Oracle Team USA in the 2017 America's Cup match. 2017 America's Cup
The 2017 America's Cup was the 35th staging of the America's Cup yacht race. The challenger, Emirates Team New Zealand, won by a score of 7 to 1 over the defender, Oracle Team USA. It was held on the Great Sound in Bermuda from June 17 to June 26. The races were conducted using hydrofoiling AC50 America's Cup Class yachts, which are slightly larger than the AC45F yachts used in the 2015–16 America's Cup World Series. It was Oracle's second defence of the America's Cup, four years after its first successful defence. Emirates Team New Zealand defended the cup in the 36th America's Cup. The format was changed since the last Cup, to the current best-of-13. Venue The 2017 America's Cup course was on the Great Sound in Bermuda, the venue at the Royal Naval Dockyard. Sir John Phillip Key (born 9 August 1961) is a New Zealand retired politician who served as the 38th Prime Minister of New Zealand from 2008 to 2016 and as Leader of the New Zealand National Party from 2006 to 2016. Nathan James Outteridge (born 28 January 1986) is an Australian sailor, a resident of Lake Macquarie. Royal Swedish Yacht Club ( sv, Kungliga Svenska Segelsällskapet, KSSS), is the largest and oldest yacht club in Sweden and one of the five oldest in the world, formed 15 May 1830. KSSS is also the oldest yacht club in Continental Europe. Activities include racing, training, education, squadron sailing, match racing and club activities. KSSS also operates the port and has its own ports in Saltsjöbaden and Sandhamn. The first regatta KSSS organized took place on 12 September 1833, and the first regatta with prizes in 1854. Every year the KSSS organizes the Round Gotland Race sailed around Gotland, and the Sandhams Regatta at Sandön, in the Stockholm archipelago. Francesco "Checco" Bruni (born 11 April 1973) is a professional sailor from Italy, together with James Spithill, helmsman of Luna Rossa during the America's Cup 2021. He is the brother of the sailor Gabriele Bruni with whom he teamed up in 49er regattas during the 2000 Summer Olympics held in Sydney, Australia. Chris Draper (born 20 March 1978) is a British sailor who has won multiple World and European championships and a bronze medal at the Sailing at the 2004 Olympic competing in the mixed 49er. He has been a winner of the Extreme Sailing Series and was helmsman for Luna Rossa, Italy's America's cup challenger 2011 to 2015. In the 34th Americas cup he became the first Britain to helm in the Louis Vuitton cup final. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, originally named Prada Challenge, then Luna Rossa Challenge, is an Italian sailboat racing syndicate first created to compete for the 2000 America's Cup. It won the Louis Vuitton Cup on their first attempt in 2000, but then lost the America's Cup match against the defending champion team, Team New Zealand. Luna Rossa challenged again for the 2003 America's Cup but was knocked out in the semi-finals stage of the Louis Vuitton Cup. In the 2007 America's Cup, held in Valencia, Spain, the team reached the final of the Louis Vuitton Cup but was again defeated by Team New Zealand. Ky Hurst (born 11 March 1981) is an Australian swimmer and Ironman (surf lifesaving), ironman. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Swimming at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's marathon 10 kilometre, 10km marathon swimming event and finished in 11th place, after qualifying by finishing fifth at the 2008 International Swimming Federation, FINA World Open Water Swimming Championship. Joey Newton (born 16 December 1977) is an Australian sailor who has competed in multiple America's Cups. Newton originally sailed Sabots, 420s and Lasers in Australia. Tom Slingsby (born 5 September 1984) is a successful Australian competitive sailor. Slingsby's first successes came sailing Laser dinghys, where he won three consecutive world championships and the 2012 Olympic gold medal. James Spithill
James Spithill (born 28 June 1979) is an Australian yachtsman. In 2010, as skipper and helmsman for BMW Oracle Racing, Spithill won the America's Cup. He defended the cup twice, both times against Emirates Team New Zealand, first successfully in 2013, when Oracle Team USA came back from a −2 penalty score at the start to win 9–8 on the final race; and unsuccessfully in the 2017 America's Cup held in Bermuda.
