2017 Jobar Offensive
The 2017 Jobar offensive was a military operation launched by the Syrian Arab Army and allies against rebel positions in the eastern outskirts of Damascus city, mainly the neighbourhood of Jobar and Ayn Tarma. Background Jobar has remained the last major stronghold of rebels in east Damascus city since the SAA restored full control over the Qaboun and Barzeh districts earlier in May 2017. From 14 to 18 June 2017, the Syrian Arab Air Force launched dozens of air and artillery strikes in Jobar to prepare for the offensive. The offensive On 20 June, Syrian government forces launched a major military operation in the Jobar suburb in eastern Damascus, in a bid to capture this long-standing rebel stronghold. Chlorine gas poisoning is an illness resulting from the effects of exposure to chlorine beyond the threshold limit value. Al-Rahman Legion
The al-Rahman Legion ( ar, فيلق الرحمن, ''Faylaq al-Raḥmān'') is a Syrian rebel group that operated in Eastern Ghouta, in the outskirts of Damascus, and in the eastern Qalamoun Mountains. It was the main rebel group in Jobar, and was backed by Qatar. The group's leader is Abdul al-Nasr Shamir, a captain from rural Homs who defected from the Syrian Army in early 2012. Zamalka
Zamalka ( ar, زملكا) is a town of Damascus in Syria, located east-northeast of Old Damascus. It is administratively a part of the Markaz Rif Dimashq District of the Rif Dimashq Governorate. Nearby localities include Jobar and Qaboun to west and northwest, Harasta and Arbin to north and northeast, Hamouriyah and Saqba to east, Kafr Batna to southeast, Ein Tarma to the south and Al-Maamouniye to southwest. The Aleppo-Damascus Highway is the districts boundary in the west, separating Zamalka from the Jobar municipality of Damascus. Barzeh, Syria
Barzeh or Barza ( ar, بَرْزَة, Barzah, also transliterated Berzé) is a municipality and a neighborhood to the north of Damascus, Syria. According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics, Barzeh had a population of 47,339 in the 2004 census. History Barzeh's foundation dates back to at least Roman times. There is archaeological evidence of Roman and Aramean tombs in the area. Traditionally it has always been a town of the Ghouta, and therefore closely linked to agriculture. Qaboun
Qaboun ( ar, ٱلْقَابُون, al-Qābūn, sometimes spelled Al-Kaboun or al-Qaboun) is a municipality and neighbourhood in Damascus, Syria, located north-east of the city center, to the north of Jobar district. History Qaboun name is derived from "Abouna" in Syriac language which means "column" or "the place where the water gathers", in reference to Barada river. In the 2004 census, it had a population of 89,974. In 2017, after the Qaboun offensive (2017), population estimates varied between 300 and 2,500 as a result of mass migration. Ein Tarma ( ar, عيـن تـرمـا), also spelled Ayn Tarma or Ain Terma, is a suburb of Damascus in Syria, located east of Old Damascus, just north of the Barada River, within an area called the Eastern Ghouta. It is administratively a part of the Arbin subdistrict, in the Markaz district of the Rif Dimashq Governorate.
