2017 Extreme Sailing Series
The 2017 Extreme Sailing Series is the eleventh edition of the sailing series and the seventh year of it being a fully global event. In 2017, the series continued in the GC32 foiling catamaran after the series moved away from the Extreme 40 in 2016. Acts Act 1: Muscat, Oman The first act of the series was held again in Muscat, Oman, on the weekend of 8–11 March 2017 . Act 2: Qingdao, China As the previous year, Qingdao, China, was the host of the second act of the 2017 series, on the weekend of 28 April to 1 May 2017. Act 3: Funchal, Madeira Islands For the second time, Madeira hosted the series as the third act in Marina Funchal, on the weekend of 29 June to 2 July 2017. GC32
The GC32 is a class of hydrofoiling catamaran, 32 feet in length (9.75 meters) and constructed of carbon fibre, with a top speed of about . They are sailed in the GC32 Racing Tour, and have replaced the Extreme 40's in the Extreme Sailing Series. History Conceived by Laurent Lenne, who was trained as a naval architect in Southampton, the GC32 was designed by Dr. Martin Fischer. Built from carbon fibre, the boat is manufactured in Dubai by Premier Composite Technologies and then marketed by Lenne's company, THE GREAT CUP BV. In 2013, the first version of the GC32 was built. In 2014, the second version of the Flying GC32 was ready by April 2014 and create the GC32Racing Tour in 2014. Mitchell Jay "Mitch" Booth (born 4 January 1963, in Sydney) is a sailor from Australia, who represented his native country for the first time at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Booth as helmsman in the Australian Tornado with John Forbes as crew took Bronze. In 1996, Booth made a second appearance this time with crew member Andrew Landenberger the team took the Silver in the Tornado. In 2004, Athens Booth represented the Netherlands as helmsman of the Dutch Tornado. With crew member Herbert Dercksen Booth took 5th place. Jordi Xammar Hernández (born 2 December 1993) is a Spanish sailor. Xammar and Nicolás Rodríguez won the bronze medal in the men's 470 event at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Roman Hagara (born 30 April 1966) is an Austrian sailor who has won the gold medal in the Tornado class at two consecutive Olympic Games. Hagara, and his colleague Hans-Peter Steinacher won the gold medal in the Tornado class at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, and successfully defended their title at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, which, to date, makes them Austria's the most successful summer sport athletes as the first professional Austrian sailing team. Andrew Maloney (born 2 June 1990) is a New Zealand professional sailor born on 2 June 1990. Sailing career From the Murrays Bay Sailing Club, he finished third in both the 2005 and 2006 World Championships in the Splash class. He finished 13th in the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships in a Laser, he then finished third at the 2012 Laser World Championships. Josh Junior (born 22 December 1989) is a New Zealand Olympic and international sailor. Sailing career During the 2015 ISAF Sailing World Cup, Junior finished second in the men's Finn event in Weymouth. After beating out Andrew Murdoch to qualify, he represented New Zealand at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the Finn class, finishing seventh. Junior joined Team New Zealand in 2016 and was part of the crew that won the 2017 America's Cup. In December 2019, Junior finished 1st at the 2019 Finn Gold Cup at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club.
