2017 Boulikessi Attack
On March 5, 2017, jihadists from Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin attacked Malian forces in Boulikessi. The attack was the first by JNIM since its inception that month. Background Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin was formed in March 2017 as a coalition of five jihadist groups that initially rebelled against the Malian government in 2012. These groups included Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Katiba Macina, Al-Mourabitoun, the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, and Ansar Dine, whose leader Iyad Ag Ghaly also became leader of JNIM. Attack The Waraba battalion of the Malian Army was attacked around 5am by three pickups in Boulikessi while on patrol on March 5. The soldiers fled the scene, some ending up in the village of Dambatousougou in Burkina Faso, and others in Mondoro. Ansar Ul Islam (Western Africa)
Ansarul Islam is a militant Islamist group active in Burkina Faso and in Mali. It was founded by Boureima Dicko, also known as Ibrahim Malam Dicko, and it is the first native Jihadi group in Burkina Faso. The group cooperates closely with Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM). History The group announced its existence in December 2016 in a statement claiming responsibility for an attack in Nassoumbou. It was founded and led by Ibrahim Malam Dicko until his death in May 2017 from natural causes. The group has claimed responsibility for several attacks. Mondoro (''Mɔ̀ndɔ́:rɔ́'') is a village and rural commune in the Cercle of Douentza in the Mopti Region of Mali, near the border of Burkina Faso. The commune contains 22 villages and had a population of 42,631 in the 2009 census. The commune is the largest by area and population in the Douentza Cercle. Mondoro village has tanners (Morba clan), dyers, and blacksmiths. Most villagers have the surnames Ongoiba and Morba. A few are also surnamed Goro and Sanga. Jamsay Dogon is spoken in the village. Iyad Ag Ghaly ( ar, اياد اغ غالي, sometimes romanised as Ag Ghali), also known as Abū al-Faḍl ( ar, أبو الفضل ), is a Tuareg militant from Mali's Kidal Region. Ansar Dine ( ar, أنصار الدين ''ʾAnṣār ad-Dīn'', also transliterated ''Ançar Deen''; meaning " helpers of the religion" (Islam) also known as Ansar al-Din (abbreviated as AAD) was a Salafi jihadist group led by Iyad Ag Ghaly.
