2017 Atlantic City Mayoral Election
The 2017 Atlantic City mayoral election was held on November 7, 2017 to elect the Mayor of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Primary elections were held on June 6. Incumbent Republican Don Guardian lost re-election to a second term to Democratic city councilman Frank Gilliam. Republican primary Candidates On March 18, the Atlantic City Republican County Committee endorsed Don Guardian for Mayor, with him receiving 5 votes, Joseph Polillo 2 votes, and three members not voting. Frank Gilliam (politician)
Frank M. Gilliam, Jr. (born May 7, 1970) is an American politician who served as the mayor of Atlantic City from 2018-2019. He defeated Republican incumbent Don Guardian in the 2017 election and became Atlantic City's third African American mayor. Gilliam was born and raised in Atlantic City, and attended Stockton University, where he obtained a BA in criminal justice. He continued his education at the University of San Francisco, obtaining a master's degree in social work, although this is disputed. He was elected councilman-at-large for the City of Atlantic City in 2008. While a member of city council, he sponsored, and succeeded in having adopted, an ordinance that imposes a fine for helium balloons released outdoors in Atlantic City due to the hazard they pose to marine life. Donald A. Guardian (born June 12, 1953) is an American Republican Party politician who has represented 2nd Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly since taking office on January 11, 2022, when he became the first openly gay Republican legislator in state history. He served as the Mayor of Atlantic City, New Jersey from 2014 to 2017. Early life and education Raised in Palisades Park, New Jersey and West New York, Guardian graduated from Don Bosco Preparatory High School. He graduated in 1975 from Upsala College. 2017 United States Mayoral Elections
The 2017 United States elections were held, in large part, on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. This off-year election featured gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey, as well as state legislative elections in both houses of the New Jersey Legislature and in the Virginia House of Delegates (the lower house of the Virginia legislature). Numerous citizen initiatives, mayoral races, and a variety of other local elections also occurred.
