The 2017 Annapolis mayoral election was held on November 7, 2017 to elect the mayor of Annapolis, Maryland. Mike Pantelides, the incumbent mayor, ran for a second term as Mayor. Gavin Buckley
Gavin Buckley (born 8 February 1963) is a South African-born Australian-American politician and former restaurateur who has been the mayor of Annapolis, Maryland since 2017. Born in South Africa and raised primarily in Perth, Western Australia, he moved to Annapolis in 1992, eventually opening multiple bars and restaurants in the city. A Democrat, he was elected mayor in 2017, his first bid at elected office, defeating incumbent Republican mayor Mike Pantelides. He was re-elected in 2021. As mayor, Buckley has worked to allow denser development in the City Dock district, drawing opposition from historic preservation advocates. He was in office during the Capital Gazette shooting on 28 June 2018, and has advocated for stricter gun control laws in its wake. Mike Pantelides
Michael John Pantelides (born September 5, 1983) is an American politician who served as the mayor of the city of Annapolis, Maryland from 2013 to 2017. He is a member of the Republican Party. Pantelides was elected in November 2013, defeating incumbent Josh Cohen. Pantelides was 30 years old at the time of his election and was the city's first Republican mayor in more than a decade. Early life and education Pantelides was born in Annapolis, Maryland on September 5, 1983 to parents John and Gloria Pantelides. He attended Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn. In 2007, he earned B.A. degree in philosophy from West Virginia University where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. Annapolis ( ) is the capital city of the U.S. state of Maryland and the county seat of, and only incorporated city in, Anne Arundel County. 2017 United States Mayoral Elections
The 2017 United States elections were held, in large part, on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. This off-year election featured gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey, as well as state legislative elections in both houses of the New Jersey Legislature and in the Virginia House of Delegates (the lower house of the Virginia legislature). Numerous citizen initiatives, mayoral races, and a variety of other local elections also occurred. Special elections were also held for one seat of the U.S. Senate, representing Alabama, and six seats of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Democrats picked up the governorship in New Jersey and the Alabama Senate seat that was up for a special election. The governorship in Virginia and the six House seats that were up for special elections did not change party hands.
