2017 AL Wild Card Game
The 2017 American League Wild Card Game was a play-in game during Major League Baseball's (MLB) 2017 postseason that was played between the American League's (AL) two wild card teams, the New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins. The game was televised nationally by ESPN. The game took place on October 3 at Yankee Stadium, with the Yankees winning 8–4, thus eliminating the Twins from the postseason and advancing the Yankees to the AL Division Series (ALDS), in which they defeated the Cleveland Indians, 3–2. 2017 Minnesota Twins Season
The 2017 Minnesota Twins season was the 57th season for the franchise in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, their eighth season at Target Field and the 117th overall in the American League. The Twins began the season on April 3 at home against the Kansas City Royals and finished the year on October 1 at home against the Detroit Tigers. On September 27, the Twins clinched the second wild-card berth to become the first team in Major League Baseball history to reach the postseason after losing 100 games the previous season. They were able to take advantage of a weak American League, as they made the playoffs despite their pedestrian 85-77 record, the worst record to make the playoffs since the 2008 Los Angeles Dodgers. Michael John Winters (born November 19, 1958) is an American former umpire (baseball), umpire in Major League Baseball who has worked in the National League from 1988 to 1999 and throughout both major leagues from 2000 to 2019, wearing number 33. Ervin Ramon Santana (born Johan Ramon Santana; December 12, 1982) is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent. He has previously played in MLB for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Kansas City Royals (twice), Atlanta Braves, Minnesota Twins, and Chicago White Sox. 2010 American League Division Series
The 2010 American League Division Series (ALDS) were two best-of-five game series to determine the participating teams in the 2010 American League Championship Series. The three divisional winners and a fourth "Wild Card" team (the team with the best record among teams not winning their division) played in two series from October 6 to 12. In Major League Baseball (MLB), the wild card teams are the three teams in each of the two leagues (American and National) that have qualified for the postseason despite failing to win their division. Those teams in each league possess the three best winning percentages in their league after the three division winners. The wild card was first instituted in MLB in 1994, with one wild card team per league advancing to the Division Series in the postseason to face a division winner. In 2012, the system was modified to add a second wild card team per league and pit each league's wild card teams against each other in a play-in game – the MLB Wild Card Game – the winner of which would then advance to the Division Series and play the team with the best record. The American League of Professional Baseball Clubs, known simply as the American League (AL), is one of two leagues that make up Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States and Canada. John Francis Tumpane (born May 4, 1983) is an American Major League Baseball umpire wearing number 74. Umpiring career He made his major league umpiring debut on August 2, 2010.
