The 2016–17 season was Wigan Athletic's 85th year in existence and their first back in the Championship, after gaining promotion the previous season. Along with competing in the Championship, the club also participated in the FA Cup and League Cup. The season covered the period from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017. Wigan ( ) is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Douglas. The town is midway between the two cities of Manchester, to the south-east, and Liverpool, to the south-west. Bolton lies to the north-east and Warrington to the south. It is the largest settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and is its administrative centre. The town has a population of 107,732 and the wider borough of 330,713. Wigan was formerly within the historic county of Lancashire. Donervon Joseph Daniels (born 24 November 1993) is a Montserratian professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Walsall. Club career West Bromwich Albion Daniels joined West Bromwich Albion in 2009 from Reading and quickly made himself a regular in Albion's FA Premier Academy League Under-18s side before moving into the Under-21s and captaining them. Jake Fred Buxton (born 4 March 1985) is an English professional footballer and manager who plays as a defender. He was most recently player-manager for EFL League One club Burton Albion. Reece James (born 7 November 1993) is an English professional footballer who plays for Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Blackpool. His usual position is as a left-back, but also occasionally plays in midfield.
