2016–17 Scottish Rugby Academy Season
The Scottish Rugby Academy provides Scotland's up and coming rugby stars a dedicated focused routeway for development into the professional game. Entry is restricted to Scottish qualified students and both male and female entrants are accepted into 4 regional academies. The 2016–17 season sees the second year of the academy. Season overview This was the second year of the Scottish Rugby Academy Regional Academies The Scottish Rugby Academy runs four regional academies in Scotland:- Glasgow and the West, Borders and East Lothian, Edinburgh and Caledonia. These roughly correspond to the traditional districts of Glasgow District (rugby union), Glasgow District, South of Scotland rugby union team, South, Edinburgh District (rugby union), Edinburgh District and North and Midlands. Scottish Rugby Academy
The Scottish Rugby Academy, for sponsorship reasons the Fosroc Scottish Rugby Academy, is a national academy structure designed to give Scotland's young rugby stars a pathway into the professional game. The academy structure is based on 4 regional academies geographically based on the traditional districts of Glasgow District. Edinburgh District, North and Midlands and South. Background The regional academies were launched at the University of Aberdeen’s Hillhead campus on 1 October 2014 at the flagship academy in Caledonia, which is a combination of North and Midlands regions. The Academies are open to the best talent, male and female, from the age of 14 onwards. The initial focus will be on players within the 16, 18 and 20-year-old age-groups and the top tier of the academy, stage three, will replace the current Elite Development Player strand within the pro-clubs. Luke Crosbie (born 22 April 1997) is a Scotland international rugby union player. He plays for Edinburgh Rugby in the United Rugby Championship. Rugby Union career Amateur career He is a product of Livingston RFC, Crosbie rose through the ranks of the West Lothian side before an opportunity arose at the capital outfit, Currie RFC. Jade Konkel
Jade Elizabeth Konkel is a professional rugby union player who plays her club rugby with Harlequins Women in the Allianz Premier 15s. She is a Number 8 and has represented the Scottish national team since 2013. Club career After moving to Glasgow to attend university, Konkel played for Hillhead Jordanhill Rugby Football Club. It was while at the club that she made history by becoming Scottish Rugby's first full-time female player in the summer of 2016. Matt Fagerson
Matthew Joseph Fagerson (born 16 July 1998) is a Scottish professional rugby union player who plays as a number eight for United Rugby Championship club Glasgow Warriors and the Scotland national team. Early life Fagerson played for the great Dundee Eagles at junior rugby level. Fagerson attended the High School of Dundee and Strathallan School and played for the Caledonia U18 district side. When not in Warriors duty, Fagerson plays for Glasgow Hawks. Club career Fagerson enrolled in the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy in 2015-16 as a Stage 2 player. Lewis Wynne
Lewis Wynne (born 27 November 1996 in Falkirk, Scotland) is a Scottish rugby union player who plays for Jersey Reds at the Flanker position. Rugby Union career Amateur career When not in Warriors duty, Wynne plays for Stirling County. He was a member of Stirling County's Youth League Cup winning team in 2013. Matthew Cameron Smith (born 5 October 1996 in Scotland) is a Scottish rugby union player who plays for Glasgow High Kelvinside. He previously played for Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby at the Flanker position. Rugby Union career Amateur career Smith was part of the Stirling County youth set-up. Bruce Flockhart
Bruce Flockhart (born 23 August 1997) is a Scottish former professional rugby union player who played for Glasgow Warriors. His usual position is at the Number Eight position. He has previously been loaned out from Glasgow Warriors and the Scottish Rugby Academy to the French side Stade Niçois for the 2017-18 season. Sam Thomson (rugby Union)
Sam Thomson (born 23 January 1994) is a Scottish rugby union player. He currently plays in Japan for Toshiba Brave Lupus in the Top League competition. His usual position is at lock. Early life and career Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Thomson was raised in Glasgow where he attended Kelvinside Academy. He represented Glasgow District at U15, U16 and U17 age grades. He moved south to England where he played with Lydney RFC and attended the University of Worcester. Callum Hunter-Hill
Callum Hunter-Hill (born 27 February 1997 in Melrose, Scotland) is a Scottish rugby union player who plays for Saracens. He typically plays second-row. Rugby Union career Amateur career Whilst in Gullane Primary School, Hunter-Hill first played mini rugby for North Berwick Rugby Club. His rugby talent was spotted while at Stewart's Melville College. Jamie Bhatti (born 8 September 1993) is a Scotland international rugby union player who currently plays as a loose head prop for Glasgow Warriors. Ross McCann
Ross McCann (born 30 October 1997) is a Scottish rugby player who plays as a winger. From a sporting family, he and his brothers Ali McCann, who is a footballer who plays for Preston North End F.C., and Lewis McCann who plays for Dunfermline F.C., are all from Edinburgh, born to an English mother and a Northern Irish father.
