2016–17 MJHL Season
The 2016–17 season was the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's (MJHL) 100th season of operation. Players and officials wore patches to commemorate Hockey Manitoba and the MJHL's centennial anniversary. The Steinbach Pistons finished with league's best regular season record for the first time in their franchise's history, however were defeated by the two-time defending champion Portage Terriers in the semi-finals. The Terriers, despite finishing fifth overall in the regular season, won the Turnbull Cup for a third consecutive season by defeating the OCN Blizzard in the final. Season highlights *The league announces the discontinuation of the Survivor Series playoff round. Manitoba Junior Hockey League
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) is a Junior 'A' ice hockey league operating in the Canadian province of Manitoba and one of nine member leagues of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL). The MJHL consists of thirteen teams all based within the province of Manitoba, eight of which qualify for each year's playoffs. The playoff champion is awarded the Turnbull Cup, the Junior 'A' championship trophy for the province of Manitoba. The winner of the MJHL playoffs (Turnbull Cup) competes against the champion from Saskatchewan for the ANAVET Cup and a berth in the Centennial Cup (formerly known as the Royal Bank Cup). History Early years (1918 to 1949) The league's first year of operation was the 1918–19 season, making it the oldest junior league in Canada. It was known as the Winnipeg and District League until 1931, when it became the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. 2017 Western Canada Cup
The 2017 Western Canada Cup was the Western Canadian Junior A ice hockey championship played at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton, British Columbia from April 29 to May 7, 2017. It determined the two Western seeds for the 2017 Royal Bank Cup. Hockey Canada confirmed after the tournament's conclusion that the all-Western format was being scrapped and that the four participating leagues would resume their Doyle and Anavet Cup rivalries, making this the final Western Canada Cup. Mike Ridley Trophy
The Mike Ridley Trophy is awarded to the player who leads the Manitoba Junior Hockey League in points scoring during the regular season. The trophy is named after former National Hockey League star Mike Ridley, who holds the MJHL single season scoring records for points (191) and goals (91), which were set with the St. Boniface Saints during the 1982–83 season. The current trophy was first awarded in 2003, replacing the Selkirk Steelers Trophy previous awarded to the scoring champion. Paul Dyck
Paul Dyck (born April 15, 1971) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman and currently the head coach and general manager of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Steinbach Pistons. Playing career Dyck played major junior hockey with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League and was drafted 236th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. He spent ten seasons in the International Hockey League, mostly with the Cleveland Lumberjacks and Houston Aeros, and was a member of the Aeros' 1999 Turner Cup championship team. Dyck moved to Germany in 2001 and played four seasons in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga with the Iserlohn Roosters and Krefeld Pinguine, and was a member of Krefeld's championship team in 2002-03. Dyck played one season with the Schwenninger Wild Wings of the 2nd Bundesliga and then retired from professional hockey in 2006. The Muzz MacPherson Award is a trophy that is presented to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League coach judged to have contributed the most to his team’s success. The trophy is named after former coach Murray MacPherson, who led the Portage Terriers to the 1973 Centennial Cup national championship. Lorne Lyndon Memorial Trophy
The Frank McKinnon Memorial Trophy is an annual award given by the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability during the regular season. The trophy is named after the late former MJHL commissioner and Hockey Canada executive. History The first trophy awarded by the MJHL for sportsmanship was the Cadet Trophy. It was succeeded by the Lorne Lyndon Memorial Trophy in 1966, named in honour of one of Canada's most renowned officials who officiated from 1933 to 1953, including six Allan Cup finals, three Memorial Cup finals, and the 1951 Alexander Cup. Vince Leah Trophy
The Kim Davis Trophy is an annual award given to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League during the regular season. The trophy is named after former MJHL commissioner Kim Davis. History The Rookie of the Year award was created in 1950. From 1967 to 1977, the award winner was presented the Gordon Petrie Memorial Trophy and from 1978 to 2022 was named the Vince Leah Trophy. Vince Leah was a sportswriter for ''The Winnipeg Tribune'' and the ''Winnipeg Free Press'', founded the Excelsior Hockey Club in 1934, which produced forty future professional hockey players and won thirteen provincial championships. Steve "Boomer" Hawrysh Award
The Steve "Boomer" Hawrysh Award is an ice hockey trophy that is presented annually to the Most Valuable Player of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) during the regular season. Steve “Boomer” Hawrysh reached a milestone in 1992 with 60 consecutive years in total hockey involvement in Dauphin. As a player, Hawrysh was on three Manitoba championship winners with the Dauphin intermediates. He began coaching in 1952 in Dauphin, Manitoba.
