The 2016–17 Biathlon World Cup (BWC) was a multi-race tournament over a season of biathlon, organised by the International Biathlon Union. The season started on 27 November 2016 in Östersund, Sweden and ended on 19 March 2017 in Holmenkollen, Norway. The defending overall champions from the 2015–16 Biathlon World Cup were Martin Fourcade of France and Gabriela Koukalová of the Czech Republic. Simon Schempp
Simon Schempp (born 14 November 1988) is a German former biathlete. Career In 2009, he made his World Cup debut. He became world champion by winning gold in the 15 km mass start race at the Biathlon World Championships 2017 in Hochfilzen. He also won three more gold medals, two for being part of the German Biathlon World Championships 2010 mixed relay team in Khanty-Mansiysk and the German Biathlon World Championships 2017 mixed relay team in Hochfilzen, and one gold medal as part of the German Biathlon World Championships 2015 men's relay team in Kontiolahti. He also competed for Germany at the 2010 Winter Olympics, finishing fifth as part of the German team in the men's relay. On 28 January 2021, he announced his retirement. Biathlon World Championships 2017
The 49th Biathlon World Championships was held from 9 to 19 February 2017 in Hochfilzen, Austria. There were a total of 11 competitions: sprint, pursuit, individual, mass start, and relay races for men and women, and mixed relay. All the events during this championships also count for the Biathlon World Cup season. Host selection The second candidate city was Östersund, Sweden. Hochfilzen was selected as the host city on September 2 2012 during the X IBU Congress in Merano, Italy (27 to 20 votes). Dmitry Vladimirovich Malyshko (russian: Дмитрий Владимирович Малышко; born 19 March 1987) is a Russian biathlete, who has been competing on the World Cup circuit since the 2011–12 season. He debuted at World Cup on 9 December 2011. He got his first podium in individual races on 12 February 2012. Johannes Thingnes Bø
Johannes Thingnes Bø (born 16 May 1993) is a Norwegian biathlete. He is the younger brother of biathlete Tarjei Bø. At the Olympic Games in Beijing 2022, they became the first siblings to have individual medals in the same biathlon event. Thingnes Bø has won the Biathlon World Cup in 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21, and 2022/2023. Thingnes Bø is described as being powerful on his skis and is the third most successful male biathlete of all time in the World Cup with 66 individual World Cup victories, including victories at the Winter Olympic Games. Arnd Peiffer (born 18 March 1987) is a German former biathlete. His greatest achievements were sprint victories in the 2018 Winter Olympics and the Biathlon World Championships 2011. During his career, he also won three World Championship relay golds as well as several other Olympic and World Championship medals. Peiffer announced his retirement in March 2021. Emil Hegle Svendsen (born 12 July 1985) is a retired Norwegian biathlete. He has won eight medals at Winter Olympics (four gold) and five individual gold medals and seven relay gold medals at World Championships. He skis with Trondhjems Skiskyttere, based in Trondheim. Career The 2005–06 season was Svendsen's first season on the World Cup tour, before then he competed as a junior in the European Cup, now known as the IBU cup. During his first season in the World Cup Svendsen finished fifth in three races, two of them in sprints (Brezno-Osrblie and Ruhpolding), and the other in a mass start (Holmenkollen). He also finished races in seventh, ninth, and four more within the top twenty (14th, 15th, 17th, 19th). He finished the overall season in 22nd place.
