Modern Pentathlon
The modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport consisting of fencing (one-touch épée), freestyle swimming, equestrian show jumping, pistol shooting, and cross country running. The event is inspired by the traditional pentathlon held during the ancient Olympics. The modern pentathlon was first held in 1912, and its rules have changed several times over the years. The latest structure, as of the 2020 Olympics, consists of three separate events for fencing, swimming, and equestrian, which determine each athlete's starting time in the final event. The last event, called the laser-run, alternates four legs of laser pistol shooting followed by an 800 m run (for 3200 m in total). The sport has been a feature of the Summer Olympic Games since 1912, despite several attempts to remove it. A world championships for modern pentathlon has been held annually since 1949. Annika Schleu
Annika Schleu (born 3 April 1990) is a German modern pentathlete. She won the gold medal of the relay event at the 2012 World Championships and 2017 World Championships. She has competed in three Olympic Games, finishing in 26th place in 2012 and in 4th place in 2016. Personal life She was born in Berlin, Germany. She is married to fellow modern pentathlete Christian Zillekens. Individual events She won the silver medal at the 2018 World Championships. At junior level, she also won silver at the 2008 European Junior Championships. Schleu was leading the competition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when she was unable to successfully complete the show jumping event, moving her from first to last place, and an eventual 31st place. Her trainer, Kim Raisner was sent home from the Olympics after footage showed her seemingly punch Schleu's assigned horse for not performing in a desired manner. Nathan Schrimsher
Nathan Schrimsher (born May 22, 1992) is an American modern pentathlete. He competed in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in August 2010 where he placed 13th in the individual event and 16th in the mixed relay. He was teamed with Cuban Leydi Laura Moya Lopez in the mixed relay. It is believed this was the first time that an American and a Cuban teamed up together in an Olympic style event in decades. He won the bronze at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, thereby earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic team for the 2016 games in Rio.
