2016 Zambia Super League
The 2016 Zambia Super League is the 55th season of the Zambian Top League. The season began on 12 March 2016. ZESCO United F.C., ZESCO United are the defending champions, coming off their second consecutive title and fifth overall, all in the last nine years. Teams locations Zambian Premier League expanded from 16 to 18 teams for the 2016 season with two clubs relegated to Zambian Division One, Division One and four promoted. Konkola Blades F.C., Konkola Blades and National Assembly F.C., National Assembly were both relegated to Zambian Division One, Division One after finishing 15th and 16th, respectively, in the 2015 season. Kabwe Warriors F.C., Kabwe Warriors, Lumwana Radiants, Lusaka Tigers and Mufulira Blackpool were each promoted from Zambian Division One, Division One. Zambia Super League
The Zambia Super League, known as the MTN Super League for sponsorship purposes, is the top association football league created in 1962 by the Football Association of Zambia. The winners of the league each season receives ZMW500,000 ($26,414.20) and a copper trophy engraved with their team name. Format The league is contested by 18 teams every season. Until 2018, it was scheduled to run within the calendar year from March to December. Since then, owing to the decision by CAF on 20 July 2017 to switch from their traditional across-year runtime/schedule of their club competitions to align with that of the UEFA/European calendar, it currently runs from August to May. The Nchanga mines are a group of copper mining operations near the municipal town of Chingola in Zambia. Nchanga Open Pit Mine The Open Pits at Nchanga Mine are situated in a crescent shaped structure 11 km long around the municipal town of Chingola in Zambia. Covering nearly 30 km² it is the second largest open cast mine in the world. The deepest part of the pit is 400 m lower than the surrounding plateau. Open Pit mining at Nchanga started in 1955, in the main Nchanga Open Pit. Subsequently, nine medium sized open pits, called satellite pits, have also been mined at one time or the other. Idris Ilunga Mbombo (born 1 June 1996 in Lubumbashi, DR Congo) is a Congolese professional footballer who currently plays for wadi Degla in Egyptian Premier league. Zambia Netting over 22 goals to aid Kabwe Warriors in their quest for promotion in 2015, Mbombo gained cult hero status at the club despite staying for only one season. Earning a reported salary of 17000 Zambian kwacha a month with ZESCO United, the Congolese forward once gave an impertinent gesture to ZESCO fans after scoring for them, later apologizing for his conduct. Rodrick Kabwe (born 30 November 1992) is a Zambian professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for South African Premier Division club Sekhukhune United and the Zambia national football team. Career Club Kabwe began his career in Zambia with Kabwe Warriors in 2011, before subsequently moving to fellow Zambian Premier League team Zanaco three years later. During his time with Zanaco, he won the 2016 Zambian Premier League. On 22 December 2016, Kabwe signed for South African Premier Soccer League club Ajax Cape Town. Patson Daka (born 9 October 1998) is a Zambian professional footballer who plays as a forward for club Leicester City and the Zambia national team. Coming through the youth system, Daka played for local club Kafue Celtic, who sent him on loan to Nchanga Rangers and Power Dynamos. In January 2017, Daka joined Red Bull Salzburg's reserve team Liefering in Austria, and was then made part of the first team in summer 2017. The Zambian Second Division, also known as Division due to sponsorship reasons, was the second division of the Football Association of Zambia. But the league pyramid was restructured before the season of 2019/20 when they also changed the league calendar to match the CAF calendar.
