2016 World Rugby Pacific Challenge
The 2016 Pacific Challenge was the eleventh World Rugby Pacific Challenge. Four teams featured in the tournament which was hosted in Fiji. The tournament was won by Fiji Warriors, who defeated by 36–0 in the final. Format The teams played against each other initially in a round-robin competition, after which the top two sides played off in a final and the bottom two sides played off for third place. The 2016 Pacific Challenge was also a testing ground for the new points system that World Rugby was trialling, where tries were valued at six points instead of five and penalty goals and drop goals were valued at two points instead of three. Fiji Warriors
The Fiji Warriors, also referred to as Fiji A, is a national representative rugby team of rugby union in Fiji. It is the second-tier side to the Fiji national team. The Warriors team is selected from players in the Fijian domestic competitions and competes in the World Rugby Pacific Challenge against Samoa A and Tonga A. Since 2016, the Fiji Warriors team has played in the Americas Pacific Challenge against national A teams from North and South America. History Fiji's national A team has made several tours to South America, the earliest being in 2003 where they defeated by 24–3 in Montevideo. But the history of the second national team can be traced back almost half a century earlier to 1955 when a Fiji XV side undertook a two-week tour of Samoa and was undefeated in all three matches played. The 2015 Pacific Challenge was the tenth World Rugby Pacific Challenge (known as the IRB Pacific Rugby Cup in previous seasons). The tournament, featuring six national 'A' rugby union teams, was hosted in Fiji. The tournament was won by Pampas XV, who defeated Fiji Warriors by 17–9 in the final. Format The teams were split into two pools and each team played the three opponents in the opposite pool. The teams finishing on top of each pool progressed to the final, the second teams in each pool played off for third place, and the bottom teams in each pool played off for fifth place. 2017 World Rugby Pacific Challenge
The 2017 Pacific Challenge was the twelfth World Rugby Pacific Challenge. Four teams featured in the tournament which was hosted in Fiji. The format was a round-robin competition without additional finals play-off matches. The hosts Fiji Warriors finished the tournament undefeated to claim the title, with Junior Japan as runner-up. World Rugby Pacific Challenge
The World Rugby Pacific Challenge, formerly the IRB Pacific Rugby Cup, is an annual rugby union football tournament held in Oceania since 2006. It is contested by national 'A' teams (formed from the best locally based players, with most not already on their nations' senior rugby team) from the Asia-Pacific region. The tournament is run by World Rugby (previously IRB) through Oceania Rugby. The original IRB Pacific Rugby Cup featured two teams from each of the three Pacific Island countries of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. The competition followed the completion of Fiji's Colonial Cup, Samoa's National Provincial Championship and Tonga's Provincial Championship and provided player development pathway leading into the IRB Pacific Nations Cup. National Stadium (Suva)
The HFC Bank Stadium ( formally known as ANZ Stadium) is a multi-purpose stadium in Suva, Fiji. HFC Stadium is used primarily for rugby league, rugby union and football matches, and features a track as well as a pitch suitable for worldwide competition. It has undercover seating for 4,000 spectators, and concrete and grass embankments that increase the capacity to 15,000 people. Suva
Suva () is the capital and largest city of Fiji. It is the home of the country's largest metropolitan area and serves as its major port. The city is located on the southeast coast of the island of Viti Levu, in Rewa Province, Central Division. Try (rugby)
A try is a way of scoring points in rugby union and rugby league football. A try is scored by grounding the ball in the opposition's in-goal area (on or behind the goal line). Rugby union and league differ slightly in defining "grounding the ball" and the "in-goal" area. In rugby union a try is worth 5 points, in rugby league a try is worth 4 points. The term "try" comes from "try at goal", signifying that grounding the ball originally only gave the attacking team the opportunity to try to score with a kick at goal. A try is analogous to a touchdown in American and Canadian football, with the major difference being that a try requires the ball be simultaneously touching the ground and an attacking player, whereas a touchdown merely requires that the ball enter the end zone while in the possession of a player.
