2016 VFL Women's Season
The 2016 VFL Women's season was the inaugural season of the VFL Women's (VFLW). The season commenced on 3 April and concluded with the Grand Final on 18 September 2016. The competition was contested by ten clubs, most of whom were independent clubs that had been transferred from the now-defunct Victorian Women's Football League. Moana Hope
Moana Hope (born 14 February 1988) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played in the AFL Women's competition from 2017 to 2019, including 13 matches over two seasons at and a further seven matches over one season at . Each followed an extended career at state-league level before the creation of a national league. Early life Hope hails from the suburb of Broadmeadows, in Melbourne's north. She is of New Zealand, German and Australian heritage, and has 14 siblings in total. Hope began playing Australian football competitively at the age of seven, playing with boys teams at Glenroy through under-12s. Without a viable youth girls league to join, Hope immediately progressed to playing senior women's football with Hadfield at the age of thirteen. She played representative football for Victoria at age 16, and captained the state side at under-19 level. Seaford Football Club
The Seaford Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Tigers'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the south eastern region of Australia, first organised in late 1921. Formation meetings were held at Armstrong's Grocery Store, Martins Garage and Weatherley's Milk Bar. The football team currently competes in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League. The netball department began at the club in 2011. The club also introduced women's football in 2013. At end of the 2016 season, Seaford FNC fielded three men's, four netball and three women's football sides. The highest profile player to come out of Seaford is retired St Kilda player and Brownlow Medallist Robert Harvey. Darcy Vescio
Darcy Vescio (born 3 August 1993) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Carlton Football Club in the AFL Women's competition. As a heavily marketed marquee player, Vescio has been referred to as a "household name" in Australia by ESPN. Junior and state league football Vescio began playing football with their brother at the age of five. Vescio was a participant in the Auskick program. They stopped playing competitive football at the age of fourteen, when they were no longer allowed to play with the youth boys team. Vescio started playing again at the age of eighteen, when they moved to Melbourne from their home town of Wangaratta and joined the Darebin Falcons in the Victorian Women's Football League (VWFL). Coburg City Oval
Coburg City Oval (also currently known as Piranha Park due to naming rights) is an Australian rules football and cricket stadium located in Coburg, Australia. It is home to the Coburg Football Club in the Victorian Football League, and the Coburg Cricket Club. The oval was officially opened in 1915. Following the Coburg Football Club's admission to the Victorian Football Association in 1925, the grandstand was constructed, and was officially opened in March 1926. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the venue was one of the VFA's finals venues, and it hosted the final in 1932. It later hosted the 1967 Division 2 finals series. Box Hill City Oval
Box Hill City Oval is an Australian rules football and cricket stadium located in Box Hill, Victoria, Australia. It is the home ground of the Box Hill Hawks Football Club which plays in the Victorian Football League, and the Box Hill Cricket Club which plays in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. Cranbourne Football Club
Cranbourne Football Club is an Australian rules football team that competes in the South East Football Netball League. They are known as the Eagles. History The history of the Cranbourne FC dates back to as far back as the 1890s after its 1889 foundation and was a founding club of the newly formed Berwick District Football Association in 1910. Despite the ongoing wars in the 1910s and from 1939 to 1945, the club remained in the competition, which changed its name to the Dandenong District Football Association, until 1953 when it relocated to the South West Gippsland Football League as an inaugural member. Cranbourne struggled in its first few years of competition in the SWGFL but managed to claim its first senior flag in the new competition in 1966 but the 1980s was to be the Eagles' best era, winning seven flags from 1985 to 1993. Melbourne University Football Club, often known simply as University, is an Australian rules football club based at the University of Melbourne. The club fields two teams, known as the "Blacks" and "Blues", who both compete in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) in the William Buck Premier Division. Daisy Pearce (born 27 May 1988) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Melbourne Football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW) competition. Often regarded as the face of women's Australian rules football, Pearce has served as Melbourne captain since the competition's inaugural season, having previously captained the club in the women's exhibition games staged prior to the 2016 creation of the league.
