2016 Strade Bianche
The tenth edition of the Strade Bianche road cycling race was held on 5 March 2016, in Tuscany, Italy. Swiss Fabian Cancellara concluded his third win in the race. The race covered , starting and finishing in Siena. It was part of the 2016 UCI Europe Tour, a 1.HC-ranked event. Route The race started and finished in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Siena, marking a shift from previous editions, which started in San Gimignano. Because of its new start location, the distance is scaled back to 176 kilometres, run entirely within the southern Tuscan province of Siena. The Strade Bianche is particularly renowned for its sectors of white gravel roads (''strade bianche'' or ''sterrati''), which comprise large sections of the route. 2016 UCI Europe Tour
The 2016 UCI Europe Tour was the twelfth season of the UCI Europe Tour. The 2016 season began on 28 January 2016 with the Vuelta a Mallorca, Trofeo Santanyí-Ses Salines-Campos and ended on 23 October 2016 with the Chrono des Nations. French rider Nacer Bouhanni (), who scored 721 points in the 2015 UCI Europe Tour, 2015 edition, was the defending champion of the 2015 UCI Europe Tour. History In 1995 Australian Bill Mitchell, a keen cyclist and professor of economics at the University of Newcastle, created the website titled "Bill’s Cycling Racing Results and News" after finding there was a need for fast-breaking news and race results in English-speaking countries. In 1999 Sydney-based publishing company Knapp Communications purchased the website from Mitchell, and in July 2007 they sold it to British publisher Future plc for £2.2m. Greg Van Avermaet (born 17 May 1985) is a Belgian professional cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam . Michał Kwiatkowski ( , born 2 June 1990) is a Polish professional road bicycle racer, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam . Kwiatkowski is seen as a strong all rounder, with good sprinting, time-trialling and climbing abilities allowing him to win both stage races and one day classics. 2014 Strade Bianche
The eighth edition of the Strade Bianche cycling race was held on 8 March 2014. The race started in San Gimignano and finished on the Piazza del Campo in Siena's city centre. The event was won by Poland's Michał Kwiatkowski of . Kwiatkowski had broken clear with Peter Sagan with 21 km remaining. The duo had built a winning lead, and Kwiatkowski distanced his breakaway companion with less than 500m to go on the steep finishing road in the centre of Siena. Sagan was unable to answer the Pole's attack and finished 19 seconds behind Kwiatkowski. Spaniard Alejandro Valverde set off in pursuit, but was unable to catch the leaders and finished third at 36 seconds from Kwiatkowski. Damiano Cunego and Roman Kreuziger rounded out the top-five. The 2013 Strade Bianche was the 7th edition of the international one-day cycling race Strade Bianche. The race was held on 2 March 2013, on the same route of the previous edition. The race started in Gaiole del Chianti and ended in ''Piazza del Campo'' in Siena. The race was won by 's rider Moreno Moser, the nephew of Francesco Moser. His team-mate Peter Sagan was second and Rinaldo Nocentini of was third. Moser attacked together with Juan Antonio Flecha with 17 km to go, chased down the four fugitives Michael Schär, Maxim Belkov, Giairo Ermeti and Aleksejs Saramotins, and attacked again for a solo breakaway on the final climb in the last kilometer.
