2016 Sheffield Brightside And Hillsborough By-election
The Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough by-election was a UK parliamentary by-election in the constituency of Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough in South Yorkshire. It was caused by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) Harry Harpham on 4 February 2016. Harpham had been the Labour Party MP for the seat since the 2015 general election. The by-election took place on 5 May 2016, the same day as local elections in the United Kingdom. Candidates Sheffield City Council published the statement of persons nominated on 8 April 2016. This showed that seven candidates would contest the by-election. The Labour candidate was Gill Furniss, a Sheffield city councillor and the widow of Harry Harpham. UKIP's candidate was Steven Winstone, a local metal trader and businessman. He focused his campaign on protecting jobs in the local steel industry. Sheffield, Brightside and Hillsborough is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament by Gill Furniss, a member of the Labour Party. History Following its review of parliamentary representation in South Yorkshire the Boundary Commission for England recommended substantial changes to the constituency boundaries in Sheffield, to add part of the Sheffield Hillsborough to the whole of the Sheffield Brightside constituency (other than a handful of houses in the corner of Walkley). The rest of the Sheffield Hillsborough constituency formed the southern half of the new Penistone and Stocksbridge seat. Electoral Calculus is a political forecasting web site which attempts to predict future United Kingdom general election results. It considers national factors but excludes local issues. Main features The site was developed by Martin Baxter, who was a financial analyst specialising in mathematical modelling. The site includes maps, predictions and analysis articles. The Yorkshire Party is a regionalist political party in Yorkshire, a historic county of England. Stevenage ( ) is a large town and borough in Hertfordshire, England, about north of London. Witney is a county constituency in Oxfordshire represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Bobby Smith (activist)
Bobby Smith (born February 1982) is a British political and fathers' rights activist. He is the founder and leader of the Give Me Back Elmo party which he set up to seek to change the law in family courts after his own experiences. Political activity Smith stood in the Witney constituency for the Give Me Back Elmo party in the 2015 general election. He and the party received media coverage as Smith and two other members of the party waited with placards to greet the Prime Minister David Cameron at the polling station where he cast his vote on election day (7 May 2015), and Smith appeared while dressed as Elmo at the vote count in numerous photos with the Prime Minister and behind him on the stage.
