2016 PRO Rugby Season
The 2016 PRO Rugby season was the inaugural and only season of the PRO Rugby, contested by teams from the United States. The season ran from April to July 2016. This was the first season of professional rugby union in North America. PRO Rugby contracted 102 players for its five teams. Of these 102 players, 54 have played international rugby, including 36 for the United States national rugby union team. About 30 players were picked from Pacific Rugby Premiership teams and 15 from Midwest Rugby Premiership teams. Competition format Each team played a twelve match schedule with six matches at home and six away. Most matches took place on Sunday to give clubs and schools the chance to play on Saturday and Friday. The league had a lighter schedule on June 5 and 12 (the 12th being during the three-week June international window). Those days had just one match. The CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium, or simply Denver Soccer Stadium, is a soccer-specific stadium located in Denver, Colorado. It is home to the Denver Pioneers soccer teams of the University of Denver, Colorado Rapids 2 of the MLS Next Pro and from June 2016 also the home of PRO Rugby team, Denver Stampede. Bonney Field
Heart Health Park is a sports venue located on the grounds of Cal Expo in Sacramento, California. The soccer-specific stadium has a capacity of 11,569 and includes a full-sized (120 x 80 yard) soccer field. Heart Health Park is the current home of Sacramento Republic FC soccer team and former home of PRO Rugby team, Sacramento Express. The field is located on the former site of the Cal Expo Amphitheatre, and is bordered on the west and south by the Cal Expo monorail, and on the east by Raging Waters water park. The Sacramento Express were a professional American rugby union team that played in the short lived PRO Rugby competition. They were based in Sacramento, California, and played their home games at Bonney Field. History In early November 2015, PRO Rugby launched its Facebook page and scheduled an announcement for November 9, 2015. On November 9, 2015, PRO Rugby made an official announcement outlining its plans and a framework for the competition. USA Rugby affirmed that it sanctioned and supported the PRO Rugby competition. Jamie Mackintosh
Jamie Mackintosh (born 20 February 1985) is a New Zealand professional rugby union player currently playing for the Austin Gilgronis in Major League Rugby (MLR). He previously played for Section Paloise in the French Top 14 competition. He was also selected for the All Blacks 2008 End of year tour to travel to Hong Kong and Britain. Mackintosh grew up in Fortrose, 50 minutes south east of Invercargill and played for the Tokanui Rugby Club's junior sides. He attended Southland Boys' High School. Paule Barford
Paule Barford is a rugby union coach. He has been the head coach of the PRO Rugby team Ohio Aviators since February 2016. Barford is originally from England, where he played with the Leicester Tigers. Following his playing days, Barford has held a number of rugby coaching positions, and holds a World Rugby Level 3 coaching certification. Memorial Park is located in the south-suburban-Columbus, Ohio, village of Obetz and stretches between the Obetz Government Center and the Street department building, which is at the western end of Orchard Lane. Pedrie Wannenburg
Pedrie Johannes Wannenburg (2 January 1981 – 22 April 2022) was a South African rugby union player. He last coached for Austin Elite Rugby in North American Major League Rugby. He played for Austin in 2018, Denver Stampede in the now defunct PRO Rugby League of North America and Castres Olympique for two seasons, after two years with Irish club Ulster.
