2016 Extreme Sailing Series
The 2016 Extreme Sailing Series was the tenth edition of the sailing series and the sixth year of it being a fully global event. 2016 saw the series move away from the Extreme 40 catamaran, and into the GC32 foiling catamaran. Acts Act 1: Muscat, Oman The first act of the series was held in Muscat, Oman on the weekend of 16–19 February 2016. Act 2: Qingdao, China Qingdao, China was the host of the second act of the 2016 series, on the weekend of 27 April–1 May 2016. Act 3: Cardiff, UK For the fifth time, Cardiff, Wales was again a host city, it was held on the weekend of 24–26 June 2016. Act 4: Hamburg, Germany Hamburg, Germany was, for the second time, a venue for the series, held on 14–17 July 2016. GC32
The GC32 is a class of hydrofoiling catamaran, 32 feet in length (9.75 meters) and constructed of carbon fibre, with a top speed of about . They are sailed in the GC32 Racing Tour, and have replaced the Extreme 40's in the Extreme Sailing Series. History Conceived by Laurent Lenne, who was trained as a naval architect in Southampton, the GC32 was designed by Dr. Martin Fischer. Built from carbon fibre, the boat is manufactured in Dubai by Premier Composite Technologies and then marketed by Lenne's company, THE GREAT CUP BV. In 2013, the first version of the GC32 was built. In 2014, the second version of the Flying GC32 was ready by April 2014 and create the GC32Racing Tour in 2014. Laurent is nowadays mainly responsible for expanding the GC32 racing experience and helping new owners to join the GC32 community. Nils Frei
Nils Frei (born 19 January 1973) is a Swiss sailor who has sailed for Alinghi in the America's Cup and Extreme Sailing Series. A six-time Swiss champion in the dinghy class, Frei finished third in the 1995 world championships in the H-boat class. He was sailing with Kurt Frei and Peter Rüfli. He attempted to qualify for the Olympics in a 49er before attending the University of Geneva, where he studied geography. He then worked for the Berne Economic Development Agency. Frei first sailed for Alinghi in 2001. He was involved in their 2003 Louis Vuitton Cup and 2003 America's Cup victories. Alinghi then successfully defended the 2007 America's Cup. Frei was the downward trimmer on '' Alinghi 5'' when it lost the 2010 America's Cup. Since then, Frei has sailed with Alinghi in the Extreme Sailing Series.
