Discus Throw
The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. It is an classical antiquity, ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue ''Discobolus''. Although not part of the current pentathlon, it was one of the events of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least 708 BC, and it is part of the modern decathlon. Hannes Kirchler (born 22 December 1978 in Merano) is an Italian discus thrower. Biography He is an eleven-time national champion in the discus throw, and a member of C.S. Carabinieri, an Italian military police sporting club. In 2007, Kirchler achieved his personal best throw of 65.01 metres at the Italian national championships in Bolzano. Rutger Smith (born 9 July 1981 in Groningen) is a retired Dutch track and field athlete who competed in the shot put and discus throw. He is the first athlete to win medals at the World Championships in both events. He represented the Netherlands at the Summer Olympics in 2004, 2008 and 2012. Martin Kupper (born 31 May 1989, in Tallinn) is an Estonian track and field athlete who competes in the discus throw. He has a personal best of , set in 2015. He is a member of the Audentese SK sports club. He competed in the discus as a teenager and began to improve in 2010, setting a best of and coming seventh at the Nordic Under-23 Athletics Championships. Zoltán Kővágó (born 10 April 1979 in Szolnok) is a Hungarian discus thrower. At the 2004 Olympic Games he initially won the bronze medal, but was promoted to silver when countryfellow Róbert Fazekas was disqualified following a doping rule violation. He himself was serving a competition ban for "evading doping testing". In August 2011 an Austrian doping controller searched for him in his former address.
