2016 Christchurch Mayoral Election
The 2016 Christchurch mayoral election was part of the New Zealand local elections held on 8 October. The incumbent mayor, former Labour MP and government Minister Lianne Dalziel, who was first elected in the 2013 mayoral election was reelected, winning a commanding 83.9% of formal votes cast in the poll. However New Zealand's local government elections in 2016 were characterized by a nationwide low participation rate which saw only 41.8% of enrolled voters cast a ballot in the election. Christchurch's turnout rate was particularly low with only 38.3% of enrolled voters actually voting, down from 52.2% in 2010. The People's Choice (political Ticket)
The People's Choice (previously Christchurch 2021) is a centre-left political ticket that contests elections for the Christchurch City Council, and the Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) in Christchurch, New Zealand. History The People's Choice was founded as Christchurch 2021 to contest the 1992 local body elections after the amalgamation of several smaller councils into a larger Christchurch City Council in 1989, and brought under one umbrella Labour local candidates with independent centre-left and left. The ticket has an association with the New Zealand Labour Party, and although it has never run a mayoral candidate under its modern title, it tends to support centre-left mayors both on council and during election campaigns. The University of Canterbury ( mi, Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha; postnominal abbreviation ''Cantuar.'' or ''Cant.'' for ''Cantuariensis'', the Latin name for Canterbury) is a public research university based in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was founded in 1873 as Canterbury College, the first constituent college of the University of New Zealand. Generation Zero is a youth-led organisation in New Zealand focused on transitioning society away from its dependency on fossil fuels and combating climate change. Generation Zero "was founded with the central purpose of providing solutions for New Zealand to cut carbon pollution through smarter transport, liveable cities & independence from fossil fuels." Guyon Espiner
Guyon Espiner (born 31 December 1970) is an investigative journalist at Radio New Zealand. He has worked in print, radio and television for more than 20 years, as a reporter, political editor and anchor. Career Espiner grew up in Christchurch. His mother, Mary Espiner, died in 2001. His father, Eric Espiner, is an endocrinologist in Christchurch. Espiner Jr. began his career at the University of Canterbury, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in English literature and a diploma in journalism. He spent ten years as a newspaper journalist, including a stint as political editor of the Sunday Star Times, before transitioning into television with TVNZ in 2003. Joanna Norris is a New Zealand-based journalist and current head of ChristchurchNZ, an organisation responsible for promotion and economic development. Prior to that, she was editor of ''The Press'', a daily broadsheet published in Christchurch. Norris was appointed as editor of ''The Press'' in 2012, having previously worked as a journalist at the newspaper. She is the first woman to become its editor. Cardboard Cathedral
The Cardboard Cathedral, formally called the Transitional Cathedral, in Christchurch, New Zealand, is the transitional pro-cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch, replacing ChristChurch Cathedral, which was significantly damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. The Cardboard Cathedral was designed by the Japanese architect Shigeru Ban and opened in August 2013. It is located on the site of St John the Baptist Church on the corner of Hereford and Madras Streets in Latimer Square, several blocks from the permanent location of ChristChurch Cathedral.
