2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup
The 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup (known as the Timico Gold Cup for sponsorship reasons) was the 88th annual running of the Cheltenham Gold Cup horse race and was held at Cheltenham Racecourse on Friday 18 March 2016. The race was won by the 9 to 4 favourite, Don Cossack, owned by Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary's Gigginstown House Stud, trained by Gordon Elliott in Ireland, and ridden by Bryan Cooper. The race gave Elliott and Cooper a first victory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Don Cossack won by 4½ lengths from Djakadam, with Don Poli a further 10 lengths behind in third place. All three placed horses were trained in Ireland. Cheltenham Gold Cup
The Cheltenham Gold Cup is a Grade 1 National Hunt horse race run on the New Course at Cheltenham Racecourse in England, over a distance of about 3 miles 2½ furlongs (3 miles 2 furlongs and 70 yards, or 5,294 m), and during its running there are 22 fences to be jumped. The race takes place each year during the Cheltenham Festival in March. The steeplechase, which is open to horses aged five years and over, is the most prestigious of all National Hunt events and it is sometimes referred to as the ''Blue Riband'' of jump-racing. Its roll of honour features the names of such chasers as Arkle, Best Mate, Golden Miller, Kauto Star, Denman and Mill House. Davy Russell
Davy Russell (born 27 June 1979) is a retired Irish National Hunt jockey. He was Irish jump racing Champion Jockey three times, and won the Grand National (twice), the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. Childhood and amateur career Russell was born David Niall Russell, the second youngest of six children, and raised on the farm of his parents Jerry and Phyllis Russell in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland . His father owned a few racehorses and the family walked puppies for the local hunt. As a child Russell’s passions were riding his pony, hurling, and helping his father with his horses. A horse length, or simply length, is a unit of measurement for the length of a horse from nose to tail, approximately . Colin Tizzard
Colin Tizzard (born 7 January 1956) is a British racehorse trainer specializing in National Hunt racing. He held a full training licence from 1998 until 2022. In 2010 Tizzard trained Cue Card to victory in the Cheltenham Festival Champion Bumper. In 2014 Tizzard trained Cue Card to victory in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. In the 2015 King George VI Chase he trained Cue Card to victory. At the 2016 Cheltenham Festival Thistlecrack won the World Hurdle to give Tizzard his first success in that race. Paddy Brennan (jockey)
Paddy Brennan (born 13 April 1981) is an Irish jump jockey. He was champion conditional jockey in the 2004/05 season and won the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup on Imperial Commander. As of 2021 he is based in Gloucestershire, where he is stable jockey at Fergal O'Brien's yard. Early life A native of Ardrahan, County Galway, Brennan was a keen GAA player with dreams of becoming a county hurler. Although not from a racing background, he had a pony and went hunting. Cue Card (horse)
Cue Card (30 April 2006 – 23 December 2022) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. A specialist steeplechaser, he won fifteen of his thirty-three races, including nine at Grade I level. He was a leading performer in National Hunt flat races, winning the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival. He was less successful over hurdles but emerged as a top-class performer when tried over larger obstacles. He won the Haldon Gold Cup, Ascot Chase and Ryanair Chase in the 2012–13 National Hunt season and the Betfair Chase in the 2013–14 season. Noel Fehily (born 24 December 1975) is a retired Irish professional horse racing jockey. Throughout his professional career, he has enjoyed substantial success including the King George VI Chase and Champion Hurdle, despite enduring significant injuries. Personal life In 2007, Fehily married Natasha Chappell at a wedding ceremony in Gougane Barra, County Cork. He has two brothers Eamonn and Micheal who both have achievements in racing and Gaa. Alan King (horse Racing)
Alan King (born 1966) is a Scottish racehorse trainer specialising mainly in National Hunt racing. He is based at Barbury Castle stables near Wroughton, Wiltshire. Paul Townend
Paul Townend (born 15 September 1990) is an Irish jockey who competes in National Hunt racing. Townend comes from Midleton in County Cork and rides primarily for the stable of Irish trainer Willie Mullins. Townend has worked for Mullins since beginning his career as an apprentice flat racing jockey. He was Irish jump racing Champion Jockey for the 2010–11, 2018–19, 2019–20, 2020–21 and 2021–22 seasons.
