The 2016 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final was the 129th event of its kind and the culmination of the 2016 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. It was played at Croke Park in Dublin on 4 September 2016. This was the 18th All-Ireland season that ended with a Kilkenny–Tipperary final. Of the previous 17, Tipperary won 10 and Kilkenny 7. It was also the fifth final between Tipperary and Kilkenny since 2009, with Kilkenny leading the series 3–1. Kilkenny were chasing three in a row with Tipperary looking for a first All-Ireland since 2010. Ger Loughnane
Gerard "Ger" Loughnane (born 27 January 1953) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a right wing-back for the Clare senior team. Born in Feakle, County Clare, Loughnane first played competitive hurling whilst at school in St. Flannan's College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Clare minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 1972-73 National Hurling League. Loughnane immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen, and won two National Hurling League medals. He was a Munster runner-up on five occasions. As a member of the Munster inter-provincial team at various times throughout his career, Loughnane won three Railway Cup medals. At club level he is a one-time championship medallist with Feakle. Throughout his career Loughnane made 26 championship appearances. The 2012 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 125th staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The draw for the 2012 fixtures took place on 6 October 2011. The championship began on 19 May 2012 and ended on 30 September 2012. Kilkenny were the defending champions and successfully retained their title following a 3–22 to 3–11 victory over Galway in a replay of the final. Brian Cody
Brian Cody (born 12 July 1954) is an Irish former hurling manager and player and retired schoolmaster. He managed the senior Kilkenny county team between 1998 and 2022, becoming the county's longest-serving manager and most successful in terms of major titles won. Cody is regarded as the greatest manager in the history of the game. Cody was appointed manager of the Kilkenny senior team on 16 November 1998 and led Kilkenny through a period of unprecedented provincial and national dominance, winning 43 major honours. Brian Carney (born 23 July 1976) is an Irish professional rugby league commentator and former dual-code rugby international player. He most recently played rugby league for Warrington Wolves, but he also played for Gateshead Thunder, Hull F.C. and Wigan Warriors in the Super League, as well as Newcastle Knights in the NRL.
