2015 World Championships In Athletics – Men's Shot Put
The men's shot put at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Beijing National Stadium on 23 August. As the best thrower in a decade, Joe Kovacs looked to be the favorite, though David Storl was the two-time defending champion. With his first throw Kovacs took the lead at 21.23. Storl raised the lead to 21.46 on his second throw. But the surprise leader at the end of the third round was O'Dayne Richards equalling his Jamaican National Record from the Pan American Games at 21.69. In the fourth round, Tomas Walsh threw his Continental Record 21.58 to take the second position. A few throws later, Kovacs moved into second place with his 21.67 fourth throw. The medals were settled in the fifth round when Kovacs threw the 21.93 winner, followed immediately by Storl throwing his 21.74 silver medal winner. The National Stadium (), also known as the Bird's Nest (), is an 80,000-capacity stadium in Beijing. Werner Günthör (born 1 June 1961 in Uttwil) is a former Swiss track and field athlete, who was the best shot putter in the history of Swiss track and field. Biography Günthör won three straight World Championships, 1987, 1991, and 1993, as well as one European Championship in 1986. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul he won the bronze medal. His personal best throw, and Swiss record, was 22.75 metres, achieved in August 1988 in Bern. Germán Luján Lauro (born 2 April 1984) is an Argentine shot putter and discus thrower. He is the South American record holder in the shot put both indoors and outdoors with marks of 21.04 m and 21.26 m, respectively. His personal best in the discus is 63.55 metres.
