2015 Virsligas Winter Cup
The 2015 Virsligas Winter Cup is the league cup's third season. It began on 19 January 2015. Skonto are the defending champion. Group stage The top two from each group advance to the Knockout stage. The third placed teams play each other to determine two more teams to join them. Skonto FC
Skonto FC was a Latvian football club, active from 1991 until 2016. The club played at the Skonto Stadium in Riga. Skonto won the Virsliga in the first 14 seasons of the league's resumption (15 in total), and often provided the core of the Latvia national football team. With those 14 national championships in a row, they set a European record, men and women's football combined, until the women of Faroese club KÍ Klaksvík won their 14th championship in a row in 2013. Following financial problems, the club was demoted to the Latvian First League in 2016 and went bankrupt in December of that year. History Fourteen titles in a row (1991–2004) Skonto FC was founded in 1991, and immediately started to win league championships, 14 in a row, until finishing second to FK Liepājas Metalurgs in 2005. Deniss Ivanovs (born 11 January 1984) is a retired Latvian footballer who played as a defender. Club career Born in Liepāja, Ivanovs played in the youth team of local club Liepājas Metalurgs. Making his senior team debut in 2001, he played 9 seasons for Metalurgs, appearing in 187 league matches, scoring 9 goals, and eventually serving as captain. In July 2009 Ivanovs went on trial with Dutch Eredivisie club, Ajax Amsterdam. He did not make the team but a month later, on 26 August 2009, he signed a three-year contract with their farm-club Ajax Cape Town of the South African Premier Soccer League. He played there for one season, making 21 appearances. In July 2010 Ivanovs moved to Turkey, signing a two-year contract with the Süper Lig club Sivasspor. Renārs Rode
Renārs Rode (born 6 April 1989 in Riga) is a retired Latvian professional footballer who played as a centre-back. He has also been capped by the Latvia national football team. Club career Skonto Riga As a youth player Renārs Rode played for the Skonto Riga academy. In 2008, he joined the Latvian Higher League club JFK Olimps, and played 15 matches, scoring his first league goal in a 7–0 victory over Daugava Rīga on 8 July 2009. In 2010 Rode moved to Skonto Rīga. During his first season at the club, he scored 3 goals in 16 league matches and under the manager Aleksandrs Starkovs became the champion of the Latvian Higher League. In 2011, he helped the club win the Baltic League and in 2012 won his first Latvian Cup with Skonto. Aleksejs Višņakovs (born 3 February 1984 in Riga) is a Latvian football midfielder, who currently plays for SK Super Nova in Latvian First League. He is also a member of Latvia national football team. Club career Latvia As a youth player Višņakovs played for JFC Skonto. Being a promising youngster, in 2001 he was brought to the first team by that time manager Aleksandrs Starkovs. It was hard for the young player to fit in the squad, as he played only 2 matches in his first season with the club. After the season, he was given away to another club from Riga, this time FK Auda, playing in the Latvian First League. Višņakovs played 20 matches for them, scoring his first goal then. Visvaldis Ignatāns (born 3 August 1991 in Daugavpils) is a Latvian footballer, who currently plays for FK Ventspils in the Latvian Higher League and Latvia national football team. Club career Visvaldis Ignatāns started playing football in his home city of Daugavpils under his first coach Genādijs Pašins. As a teenager he moved to the other side of the country, joining FK Ventspils academy. Ignatāns has been playing for the club ever since, debuting in the first team in 2007. During the first three professional seasons with FK Ventspils Ignatāns played five league matches, being loaned to Tranzīts Ventspils in 2009.
