2015 Southeast Asian Games Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony of the 2015 Southeast Asian Games was held on Friday, 5 June 2015, beginning at 20:15 Singapore Standard Time, SST (UTC+08:00, UTC+8) at the Singapore Sports Hub, National Stadium in Singapore, the first major opening ceremony for a sporting event in the new venue. Background The Singapore Armed Forces organized the ceremony, which has also been responsible for the annual Singapore National Day Parade, National Day Parade. They were supported by a creative team, with Beatrice Chia-Richmond serving as Creative Director. The ceremony was helmed by more than 5,000 performers and volunteers and supported by 3,500 soldiers. Given the enclosed nature of the stadium, extensive use of an aerial system to allow suspension and movement of performers and props are possible. Floor projection are accomplished using 160 multimedia high-definition projectors. Singapore Standard Time (SST), also known as Singapore Time (SGT), is used in Singapore and is 8 hours ahead of UTC (UTC+08:00). Singapore does not observe daylight saving time. History As part of the Straits Settlements, Singapore originally adopted the Malayan time, which was GMT+07:30 in 1941. Following the Japanese occupation, Singapore (known as Syonan-to during this time) adopted the Tokyo Standard Time of GMT+09:00 on 15 February 1942. At the end of World War II and the return of the Straits Settlements to the British, Singapore reverted to its pre-war time zone. Daylight saving time in Singapore Although Singapore does not currently observe daylight saving time in the traditional sense due to its tropical location, a form of daylight saving time, using a 20-minute offset, was introduced on an annual basis by the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements in 1933.
