2015 Savannah Mayoral Election
The 2015 Savannah mayoral election took place on November 5 and December 1, 2015. It saw the election of Eddie DeLoach, who unseated incumbent mayor Edna Jackson. This was the first time in over 20 years that an incumbent mayor of Savannah lost reelection. Eddie DeLoach became the first person elected mayor of Savannah to identify as a Republican since Susan Weiner was in 1991. Edna Jackson (politician)
Edna Branch Jackson (born September 18, 1944) is an American politician from Georgia. Jackson is a Democratic member of the Georgia House of Representatives for District 165. She was previously the Mayor of Savannah from 2012 to 2015, the first female African-American to hold the office. Early life and education Edna Jackson was born in Savannah, Georgia, to parents Georgia Branch Dillard and Henry Reid. In an interview by Stephen Moody of WJCL, Jackson is quoted as beginning her community service involvement at nine years old, after meeting Wesley Wallace Law. She joined the NAACP Youth Council, with whom she participated in non-violent protests for racial equity across North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. She graduated High School in 1962 from Alfred E. Susan Scher Weiner (c. 1946 – August 11, 2012) was an American politician from U.S. state of Georgia, and was the first woman to become Mayor of Savannah. She was a Republican. Background Weiner, who was Jewish, was born as Susan Scher in Albany, New York and graduated from SUNY New Paltz. She moved to Savannah in the mid-1980s. Political career Weiner ran for Mayor of Savannah in 1991. She won the Republican nomination without opposition and defeated five-term incumbent and Democratic nominee John Rousakis with 54% of the vote. She conducted a law and order campaign in which she promised to address local crime issues.
