2015 Lancaster City Council Election
Local elections were held for Lancaster City Council on 7 May 2015, the same day as the 2015 United Kingdom general election and other 2015 United Kingdom local elections. Local elections are held every four years with all councillors up for election in multi-member electoral wards. Boundary review The Local Government Boundary Commission for England reviewed the local boundaries of Lancaster council in 2014. The number of councillors elected to Lancaster will not change although some electoral wards have been redrawn and renamed. The changes are made official by the Lancaster (Electoral Changes) Order 2014. Heysham
Heysham ( ) is a coastal town in Lancashire, England, overlooking Morecambe Bay. It is a Heysham Port, ferry port, with services to the Isle of Man and Ireland, and the site of two Heysham nuclear power station, nuclear power stations. Torrisholme
Torrisholme is a suburb of Morecambe, Lancashire, on the North West coast of England. In the 2001 census, the Torrisholme Ward had a population of 6,758 living in 3,118 households, decreasing marginally to 6,755 at the 2011 Census. Torrisholme was referred to as ''Toredholme'' in the Domesday Book. Geography Torrisholme is a suburban village, east of the centre of Morecambe. Poulton-le-Sands is north-west of the village with Bare located to the north. The boundary with Bare is formed by the Morecambe Branch Line, on which Bare Lane railway station is situated. East of the village is Skerton, a suburb of Lancaster. Landmarks Torrisholme Barrow, a drumlin feature to the north of the village, is a mound that provides 360-degree views over Morecambe Bay and the city of Lancaster. Skerton
Skerton is an area in the north of Lancaster, Lancashire, England, on the other side of the River Lune to the castle. It was formerly a township, but in the late 1800s it was incorporated into Lancaster and the neighbouring townships. Skerton Bridge takes the A6 southwards towards the city centre. Origin of the name The origin of the name is based on Old Norse sker, Skerton meaning the ''tun by the reefs'' (i.e. sand banks in the River Lune which ran through the original Township). The history of the Township to 1914 is shown in the Victoria County History. Neighbouring Lancaster annexed parts of Skerton in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the Township was divided between Lancaster and adjacent parishes. Silverdale, Lancashire
Silverdale is a village and civil parish within the City of Lancaster district of Lancashire, England. The village stands on Morecambe Bay, near the border with Cumbria, north west of Carnforth and of Lancaster. The parish had a population of 1,519 recorded in the 2011 census. Silverdale forms part of the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The RSPB's Leighton Moss nature reserve is close to the village train station. The National Trust owns several pieces of land in the area. The former Tarmac-owned Trowbarrow quarry is now a SSSI and popular climbing location. The Lancashire Coastal Way footpath goes from Silverdale to Freckleton, and the Cumbria Coastal Way goes from Silverdale to Gretna. Scotforth
Scotforth is a suburb in the south of the city of Lancaster, Lancashire, Lancaster in Lancashire, England. It is home to Scotforth St Paul's Church of England Primary School and St Paul's Church, Scotforth, St Paul's Church. Overton is a village and civil parish in Lancashire, England, south west of Lancaster and south of Morecambe between Heysham and the estuary of the River Lune. John Of Gaunt, 1st Duke Of Lancaster
John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster (6 March 1340 – 3 February 1399) was an English royal prince, military leader, and statesman. He was the fourth son (third to survive infancy as William of Hatfield died shortly after birth) of King Edward III of England, and the father of King Henry IV. Due to Gaunt's royal origin, advantageous marriages, and some generous land grants, he was one of the richest men of his era, and was an influential figure during the reigns of both his father and his nephew, Richard II. As Duke of Lancaster, he is the founder of the royal House of Lancaster, whose members would ascend the throne after his death. His birthplace, Ghent in Flanders, then known in English as ''Gaunt'', was the origin of his name. When he became unpopular later in life, a scurrilous rumour circulated, along with lampoons, claiming that he was actually the son of a Ghent butcher. Ellel, Lancashire
Ellel is a village and civil parish in the City of Lancaster in the English county of Lancashire. It had a population of 4,895 in 2011, up from 2,521 in 2001 The parish includes the villages of Bay Horse, Galgate and Hampson Green, and part of Dolphinholme. The disused Church of St Mary was built on Ellel Grange estate in 1873 by W. & G. Audsley. The Anglican parish of Ellel is currently served by St John's Church which has stood in its present form since 1907. Hay Carr on the outskirts of Ellel is a country house built by Thomas Lamb in 1750 and later owned by the Sandeman Port family. Governance An electoral ward in the same name exists. Lancaster (, ) is a city and the county town of Lancashire, England, standing on the River Lune. Its population of 52,234 compares with one of 138,375 in the wider City of Lancaster local government district. The House of Lancaster was a branch of the English royal family.
