2015 Chicago Aldermanic Election
The 2015 Chicago aldermanic elections happened on February 24, 2015, to elect the 50 Aldermen that represent Chicago in the City Council. The elections were non-partisan and if no candidate received an absolute majority, a runoff would be held between the top two finishers on April 7, 2015. Ward boundaries had been redrawn since the previous 2011 election, to reflect the results of the 2010 United States Census. The new ward map had been approved by the Chicago City Council in January 2012. Overview Campaign 43 incumbent alderman sought re-election. Aldermen Edward M. Burke (14th Ward), Marty Quinn (13th Ward), Brendan Reilly (42nd Ward) and Harry Osterman (48th Ward) all ran unopposed in this election. Aldermen Toni Foulkes (15th Ward) and Nicholas Sposato (36th Ward) ran in different wards than those they had been incumbents of: the 16th and 38th, respectively. Aldermanic Elections In Chicago
The City of Chicago has held elections to its City Council since its incorporation in 1837. Elections were held annually from 1837 through 1921, biennially from 1923 through 1933, and quadrennially starting in 1935. From 1851 through 1922 the Council was staggered and half of it was chosen at each election, but before 1851 and since 1923 the entire Council has been elected at each election. Members of the Council are known as "aldermen"—a term that is gender-neutral, although "alderwoman" and "alderperson" are occasionally encountered—and are elected from districts known as "wards". Since 1923 there have been fifty wards, each entitled to one alderman. Prior to that time the number of wards varied but they were almost always entitled to two aldermen each. Timothy M. Cullerton is a former Chicago City Council member who represented the 38th Ward on Chicago's Northwest Side. He was appointed by Mayor Richard M. Daley in 2011. Background Cullerton's grandfather, William Cullerton, father, Thomas W. Cullerton, and brother-in-law, Thomas Allen, also served as 38th Ward alderman. Ray Suarez (politician)
Regner E. "Ray" Suárez (born October 26, 1946) is the former alderman of the 31st Ward of the City of Chicago; he was first elected in 1991. He was unsuccessful in the April 2015 election, and left office May 2015. In November 2015, he was appointed to a position on the Illinois International Port District Authority. Personal life Suárez was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico, and later enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He is a Vietnam Veteran. He and his wife, Marta, live in the Cragin neighborhood. Chris Taliaferro is a Democratic Alderman representing the 29th ward of the city of Chicago. The 29th ward includes the Austin, Montclare and Galewood areas.
