2015 Alabama State Hornets Baseball Team
The 2015 Alabama State Hornets baseball team represented Alabama State University during the 2015 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Hornets played their home games at the Wheeler–Watkins Baseball Complex as a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They were led by head coach Mervyl Melendez, in his fourth season at Alabama State. Previous season In 2014, the Hornets finished the season as champions of the SWAC's East division with a record of 37–20, 21–3 in conference play. They qualified for the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament, and were eliminated in the finals. They failed to qualify for the 2014 NCAA Division I baseball tournament. Mervyl Melendez
Mervyl Samuel Melendez Sr. is a Puerto Rican baseball coach and former third base and as a relief pitcher. He played college baseball for the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats baseball, Bethune-Cookman Wildcats from 1993–1996. He then served as the head coach of Bethune-Cookman (2000–2011), the Alabama State Hornets baseball, Alabama State Hornets (2012–2016) and the FIU Panthers baseball, FIU Panthers (2017–2022). Melendez played for Bethune-Cookman from 1993 through 1996, seeing time at third base and relief pitching. At his playing career's end, he held program records in doubles (30) and batting average (.342). Melendez earned all-conference and all-tournament honors in 1995 and 1996. Following the end of his playing career, Melendez became an assistant coach for the Wildcats. During his tenure as an assistant, the team won the 1999 MEAC Tournament. Kyle Funkhouser
Kyle James Funkhouser (born March 16, 1994) is an American professional baseball pitcher in the Texas Rangers organization. He played college baseball for the Louisville Cardinals, and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers with the 115th overall selection in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. Amateur career Funkhouser attended Oak Forest High School in Oak Forest, Illinois. As a senior, he was the Illinois Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year after going 11–2 with a 0.65 earned run average (ERA) and 132 strikeouts. He finished his career with school records in wins, strikeouts, ERA and innings pitched. Funkhouser was also on the school's football and basketball teams. As a freshman at the University of Louisville in 2013, Funkhouser appeared in 22 games for the Louisville Cardinals baseball team, with six starts. Eddie Stanky Field
Eddie Stanky Field is a baseball park in Mobile, Alabama. During the 1990s, it was the home of the Mobile BaySharks. It is currently home to the South Alabama Jaguars baseball team and was home to the 2007 Sun Belt Conference baseball tournament. The ballpark has a capacity of 4,500 people.
