2014 World Allround Speed Skating Championships
The 2014 World Allround Speed Skating Championships took place at the indoor ice rink of the Thialf arena in Heerenveen, Netherlands, on 22–23 March 2014. Ireen Wüst won the women's title for the fifth time while Koen Verweij won his first world title. Rules All 24 participating skaters are allowed to skate the first three distances; 8 skaters may take part on the fourth distance. These 8 skaters are determined by taking the standings on the longest of the first three distances, as well as the samalog standings after three distances, and comparing these lists as follows: # Skaters among the top 8 on both lists are qualified. # To make up a total of 8, skaters are then added in order of their best rank on either list. Samalog standings take precedence over the longest-distance standings in the event of a tie. Thialf
Thialf is an ice arena in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Thialf consists of the Thialf-hal (a 12,500-capacity speed skating venue) and the Elfstedenhal (a 2,500-capacity ice hockey venue). Thialf is used for long track speed skating, short track speed skating, ice hockey, figure skating, ice speedway, and non-sporting events. The outdoor rink was opened in 1967, and the indoor stadium was opened in 1986. Several world records have been set in the indoor stadium. Annually, Thialf hosts two Speed Skating World Cup events. Jan de Jong was the ice rink master at Thialf for many years. History Thialf is named after Thialfi, a character in Norse mythology, who was Thor's servant and had to race a giant. Construction on the artificial outdoor ice rink was started in 1966, and it was opened on 14 October 1967 by Princess Christina of the Netherlands. Sverre Lunde Pedersen
Sverre Lunde Pedersen (; born 17 July 1992) is a Norwegian speed skater. He is the son of former speed-skater Jarle Pedersen. Career He is a two-time World Junior Champion and represents the club Fana Idrettslag. In 2011 he was 6th in the European Championships in Collalbo and 14th in the World Championships in Calgary. In 2012 he finished 7th at the European Championships, with 2nd place in the 1500 m, and 8th at the World Championships. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi he finished 5th on the 5000 m. At the 2018 Winter Olympics he partnered compatriots Håvard Bøkko, Simen Spieler Nilsen and Sindre Henriksen to win the gold medal in the men's team pursuit. Patrick Meek
Patrick Meek (born November 10, 1985) is American speed skater who represented the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Meek began speed skating at age two, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. After high school, he moved to Utah to further his speed skating career. He made the national team in 2006 and participated in the 2006 and 2010 Olympic Trials without success. Meek placed second in the 10,000 meters at the 2012–2013 National Championships. In 2013, he won two national titles taking the 25,000 and 50,000 meter events. In December, he placed third in the 5,000 meters at the Olympic Trials and thus qualified for his first Olympics. At the Olympics, Meek placed 20th in the 5,000 meters and 10th in the 10,000 meters after being added to the start list when other skaters withdrew. Jordan Belchos (born June 22, 1989) is a Canadian speed skater. He primarily skates in the long distances of 1500 m, 5000 m and 10 000 m, as well as the mass start event.
