Keirin
– literally "racing cycle" – is a form of motor-paced cycle racing in which track cyclists sprint for victory following a speed-controlled start behind a motorized or non-motorized pacer. It was developed in Japan around 1948 for gambling purposes and became an official event at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Riders use brakeless fixed-gear bicycles. Races are typically long: 6 laps on a track, 4 laps on a track, or 4 laps on a track. Lots are drawn to determine starting positions for the sprint riders behind the pacer, which is usually a motorcycle, but can be a derny, electric bicycle or tandem bicycle. Matthew "Matt" Nicholas Crampton (born 23 May 1986) is an English former track cyclist for . He was a member of British Cycling's Olympic Podium Programme, and represented Great Britain at a number of major events. Crampton specialised in track sprinting and competed in the individual sprint, team sprint, keirin and kilo events. Biography Born in Manchester, Crampton won the junior sprint and keirin events at the 2004 European Track Championships. Crampton competed at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Bendigo, Australia in 2004, winning a silver medal in the keirin. Dato' Muhammad Azizulhasni bin Awang (born 5 January 1988) is a Malaysian professional track cyclist. Nicknamed "The Pocket Rocketman" due to his small stature, he is the first and the only Malaysian cyclist to win a medal at the Summer Olympics. Azizulhasni was Team Malaysia's national flag bearer at the 2008 Summer Olympics Parade of Nations. He won his first World Championship medal in 2009, a silver in the individual sprint. Kian Emadi-Coffin (born 29 July 1992) is a former British track cyclist. He has represented Great Britain and England at international level, and is a three-time British National Track champion. Originally a sprinter, he transferred following injury to the endurance squad, and in 2018 won a gold medal as part of the team pursuit squad for Great Britain at the 2018 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Simon Paul van Velthooven (born 8 December 1988) is a New Zealand track racing cyclist and America's Cup sailor. Van Velthooven was born in Palmerston North in 1988. He has two younger sisters; his youngest sister, Emily, works as a journalist for Television New Zealand (TVNZ). Edward James Dawkins (born 11 July 1989) is a New Zealand track cyclist. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games he won the silver medal in the men's sprint and the bronze medal in the men's 1 kilometre time trial. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, he won the bronze medal in the men's sprint, and was part of the New Zealand time that won the gold medal in the team sprint, with Ethan Mitchell and Sam Webster. Maximilian Levy (born 26 June 1987) is a German former track cyclist. Levy won a bronze medal in the men's team sprint representing Germany at the 2008 Olympic Games held in Beijing, China. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he won another bronze in the men's team sprint, and a silver in the men's keirin. He was the world champion in keirin 2009 and in the team sprint 2010, 2011, and 2013.
