2014 Tallahassee Mayoral Election
The 2014 Tallahassee mayoral election took place on August 26, 2014 in the city of Tallahassee, Florida. Incumbent Mayor John Marks refused to run a third term which resulted in a new seat being open for the candidates. A nonpartisan primary was held between three candidates with Andrew Gillum winning the race by 76 percent. A run-off election was supposed to be held on November 4 between Gillum and the write-in candidate Evin Matthews. However, Mathews withdrew from the race on August 27, 2014, resulting in Gillum becoming the mayor-elect. Andrew Gillum
Andrew Demetric Gillum (born July 26, 1979) is an American former politician who served as the 126th mayor of Tallahassee from 2014 to 2018. He served as a Tallahassee city commissioner from 2003 until 2014, first elected at the age of 23. He is a member of the Democratic Party. In 2018, Gillum was the nominee of the Florida Democratic Party to be the governor of Florida. He had won the Democratic primary election over a field of five other candidates, including former U.S. representative Gwen Graham and former Miami Beach mayor Philip Levine. In the general election, he lost in a close race to Republican U.S. representative Ron DeSantis. Gillum's margin of defeat was just 34,000 votes (0.4%), making the election one of the closest gubernatorial races in modern American history. John Marks (mayor)
John Robert Marks III (born July 25, 1947) is an American lawyer, politician, and former Mayor of Tallahassee, Florida from February 2003 until November 2014. Marks is the longest-serving mayor in Tallahassee's history. He was elected to three consecutive terms as the city's Mayor, spanning nearly ten years. He won a third term in 2010, but declined to seek re-election for a fourth term in 2014. He was succeeded by Andrew Gillum on November 21, 2014. Marks was Tallahassee's fifth African-American mayor but the first to be elected. Biography Marks' great-grandfather, Oliver Lewis Coleman, founded Coleman College, a now defunct historically black college in Gibsland, Louisiana, in 1887. Coleman College closed in 1952. He received his B.S. in 1969 from the Florida State University School of Business and his Juris Doctor in 1972 from the Florida State University College of Law. A general election was held in the U.S. state of Florida, on November 4, 2014. State elections Governor and Lieutenant Governor Incumbent Republican Governor Rick Scott and Lieutenant Governor Carlos López-Cantera sought re-election. Scott faced Elizabeth Cuevas-Neunder, a conservative activist and candidate for governor in 1998 and Yinka Adeshina, a pharmacist, in the Republican primary.
