2014 Oxford City Council Election
The elections for Oxford City Council took place on Thursday 22 May 2014. As Oxford City Council is elected by halves, one seat in each of the 24 wards is up for election, apart from in Summertown ward where both seats are up for election following the resignation of Councillor Stuart McCready on 3 April 2014. Overall turnout was 37%, up from 29.4% in 2012. Results Note: six UKIP candidates stood in this election, compared with three in 2012 and one in 2010. One candidate stood for the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, compared with none in either 2010 or 2012. Four independent candidates were standing, compared with one each in 2012 and 2010. Oxford Local Elections
Oxford City Council in Oxford, England is elected every two years, with half of the 48 seats in the City Council up for election on each occasion. Elections are held in even-numbered years. Oxford City Council is the lower-tier local government authority for the city of Oxford in England, providing such services as leisure centres and parking. Social Services, Education and Highways services (amongst others) are provided by Oxfordshire County Council. Ward (politics)
A ward is a local authority area, typically used for electoral purposes. In some countries, wards are usually named after neighbourhoods, thoroughfares, parishes, landmarks, geographical features and in some cases historical figures connected to the area (e.g. William Morris Ward in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, England). It is common in the United States for wards to simply be numbered. UKIP
The UK Independence Party (UKIP; ) is a Eurosceptic, right-wing populist political party in the United Kingdom. The party reached its greatest level of success in the mid-2010s, when it gained two members of Parliament and was the largest party representing the UK in the European Parliament. The Official Monster Raving Loony Party (OMRLP) is a political party established in the United Kingdom in 1982 by the musician David Sutch, also known as "Screaming Lord Sutch, 3rd Earl of Harrow", or simply "Lord Sutch". 2012 Oxford City Council Election
Elections for Oxford City Council were held on Thursday 3 May 2012. As Oxford City Council is elected by halves, one seat in each of the 24 wards is up for election. Overall turnout was 29.4%, down from 61.7% in 2010. However, the 2010 election was held on the same day as the general election, accounting for the unusually high turnout in that year. The lowest turnout (17.5%) was in Northfield Brook ward and the highest (42.5%) in Iffley Fields. Results Note: three UKIP candidates stood in this election, compared with one in 2010 and none in 2008. The last remaining councillor for the Independent Working Class Association, in Northfield Brook ward, stood down at this election; the seat was taken by the Labour Party. 2010 Oxford City Council Election
Elections for Oxford City Council were held on Thursday 6 May 2010. As Oxford City Council is elected by halves, one seat in each of the 24 wards was up for election. Labour gained two seats (Barton and Sandhills ward from the Liberal Democrats and Northfield Brook ward from the Independent Working Class Association), the Liberal Democrats also gained two seats (Carfax and St Clement's ward, both from the Green Party). As a result of this election, Labour gained control of the city council, with 25 out of 48 seats. A general election was held on the same day, which accounts for the higher turnout (61.7%). Farida Anwar
Farida Anwar ( bn, ফরিদা আনোয়ার; born 1946) is a British Labour Party politician and councillor for Headington Hill and Northway in Oxford City Council. In 2014, she became Oxfordshire's first city councillor from a Bangladeshi background. Early life Anwar was born in the Faridpur District, East Bengal, Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Her late father is former civil servant, Shah Muhammad Israil Haq, who settled in the UK in 1965 and held senior positions in British Civil Service, retired as a Joint Secretary in Bangladesh Civil Service and is directly related to the family of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
