2014 FIFA World Cup Group B
Group B of the 2014 FIFA World Cup consisted of Spain national football team, Spain, the Netherlands national football team, Netherlands, Chile national football team, Chile, and Australia national soccer team, Australia. This group contained the finalists of 2010 FIFA World Cup, the previous World Cup in 2010: Spain (reigning champion) and the Netherlands (runners-up). Play began on 13 June and ended on 23 June 2014. The Netherlands and Chile progressed to the knockout stage, while Australia and Spain were eliminated after suffering two defeats in their opening two matches. Chile was eliminated by Brazil in the second round after penalties, while the Netherlands made their way to the semi-finals in which they lost to Argentina on penalties. 2014 FIFA World Cup
The 2014 FIFA World Cup was the 20th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial world championship for men's national football teams organised by FIFA. It took place in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014, after the country was awarded the hosting rights in 2007. It was the second time that Brazil staged the competition, the first being in 1950, and the fifth time that it was held in South America. The Asian Football Confederation is the governing body of association football, beach soccer, and futsal in some countries/territories in Asia and Oceania. It has 47 member countries most of which are located in Asia. Australia, formerly in Oceania Football Confederation, OFC, joined AFC in 2006. Stefan de Vrij (born 5 February 1992) is a Dutch professional footballer who plays as a centre back for club Inter Milan and the Netherlands national team. He began his career at his local club VV Spirit, and debuted as a professional for Feyenoord aged 17. 2014 FIFA World Cup Knockout Stage
The knockout stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup was the second and final stage of the competition, following the group stage. It began on 28 June with the round of 16 and ended on 13 July with the final match of the tournament, held at Estádio do Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro. The top two teams from each group (16 in total) advanced to the knockout stage to compete in a single-elimination tournament. A third-place match was played between the two losing teams of the semi-finals. In all matches in the knockout stage, if the score was level at the end of 90 minutes, two 15-minute periods of extra time were played.
