2014 Donegal County Council Election
An election to Donegal County Council took place on 23 May 2014 as part of that year's Irish local elections. 37 councillors were elected from five electoral divisions by PR-STV voting for a five-year term of office. In addition Ballyshannon Town Council, Bundoran Town Council and Letterkenny Town Council were all abolished. The arrest of one candidate was ordered ahead of the election. Gary Doherty of Sinn Féin and independent Frank McBrearty Jnr, a former county mayor and formerly of Labour, were the first candidates to be elected. Both were elected on the first count in the Stranorlar Electoral Area. Another candidate Ian McGarvey, who went into the election as Ireland's oldest Mayor, was re-elected in the Letterkenny Electoral Area. The count concluded in Letterkenny in the early hours of Monday 26 May, when Mick Quinn of Sinn Féin narrowly triumphed over independent Donal Cullen just after 5 am. Gerry McMonagle
William Gerard "Gerry" McMonagle is an Irish Sinn Féin politician. He is a member of Donegal County Council, representing the Letterkenny Electoral Area. He has appeared on national radio to discuss local events. He has also been a mayor. Arrest and trial McMonagle was arrested a week after the 1982 murder of Hugh "Lexie" Cummings - shot while driving home for lunch from his workplace in Strabane, County Tyrone. McMonagle was held in custody until the case went to trial the following year. He was then released due to papers being improperly countersigned but was arrested again while departing from court. He was later released again. At this point he crossed the border and took up residence in County Donegal on the north-west of the island. James Pat McDaid
James Pat McDaid (born 1980s) is an Irish sportsman and politician. A Gaelic footballer, he has played for and captained the Glenswilly senior team. Born to James and Peggy (née McDermott of Termon), McDaid has four siblings: Barry, Nicola, Aisling and Mark. He grew up at Glenkeeragh, Glenswilly, attended Glenswilly National School and St Eunan's College in Letterkenny, then studied Sustainable Building Technology at Institute of Technology, Sligo. McDaid has won two Donegal Senior Football Championships (2011 and 2013). He scored a point in the 2011 final and captained the team during the 2013 final. John O'Donnell (Irish Politician, Born 1980s)
John O'Donnell (born between December 1980 and July 1981) is an Irish politician, businessman and self-described developer, populist and realist. As of 2020, he is a member of Donegal County Council, representing the Milford Electoral Area. Electoral history O'Donnell's father Eddie was also a county councillor. Eddie O'Donnell was killed in a car accident in 1993. John O'Donnell first stood as a candidate at the 2014 Donegal County Council election. Ciaran Brogan
Ciaran Brogan (born 1971 or 1972) is an Irish businessman and Fianna Fáil politician from County Donegal. He is a member of Donegal County Council, representing the Letterkenny Electoral Area, and was a member of Letterkenny Town Council. He topped the poll in elections in 2004 and 2009. Brogan owns SARK Construction Ltd, based in Letterkenny. Several members of Donegal County Council, including Barry O'Neill, have queried how €4.812 million was spent on SARK's council-backed housing development in Dungloe. The company is known to have received contracts worth more than €10 million. SARK Construction is also a recognised tax defaulter. Enda Bonner
Enda Bonner (born October 1949) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and sportsperson. He was a councillor for the Glenties electoral area of Donegal County Council from 1999 to 2019. He was also a Senator from 1997 to 2002. He attempted to win election to Dáil Éireann in 2002. He also played for the Donegal county football team. Barry O'Neill
Barry O'Neill is an Irish sports broadcaster, producer and a retired politician from County Donegal. He is a producer with ''Sunday Sport'' on RTÉ Radio 1. He regularly presents bulletins on RTÉ Radio 1 and RTÉ 2fm. He was elected to Donegal County Council in 2004, 2009 and 2014 before retiring in 2019. Tom Conaghan
Tom Conaghan is an Irish Gaelic football figure who managed Donegal county football teams during the 1980s and, later, the Sligo senior team. His former players regarded him as a disciplinarian in his approach to management. Conaghan managed Donegal to the 1982 All-Ireland Under-21 Football Championship. He later took over from Brian McEniff as senior manager when McEniff had led the 1983 Ulster Senior Football Championship campaign to a win. Over the course of his time as senior manager during the 1980s, Conaghan fell out with numerous players. Sean McEniff
Sean McEniff (12 January 1936 – 21 April 2017) was an Irish businessman and Fianna Fáil politician who served as a Donegal County Councillor for the Donegal local electoral Area. At the time of his death in 2017, he was the longest serving councillor in Ireland. He was first elected to Donegal County Council in 1967 and was returned every time until the final election before his death, with the exception of 1979 when he stood in the 1979 European Parliament election in the Connacht–Ulster, though was not elected. Ian McGarvey
Ian McGarvey (born July 1929) is a former association footballer and former politician. He is a member of Donegal County Council, representing the Letterkenny Electoral Area. Due to his age (his political career peaking while an octogenarian) he is often portrayed as an underdog, "They're always writing me off. I don't worry about that", he once said after being re-elected. He has a special interest in the elderly, and has attracted attention after describing cuts to their care as a form of " euthanasia". He did a noteworthy dance after being re-elected in 2014. McGarvey has lived at Moorfield in Ramelton, County Donegal, for more than 50 years.
