2014 Cork County Council Election
An election to all 55 seats on Cork County Council was held on 23 May 2014 as part of the 2014 Irish local elections, contested by a field of 114 candidates. Cork County Council
Cork County Council ( ga, Comhairle Contae Chorcaí) is the authority responsible for local government in County Cork, Ireland. As a county council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation, urban planning and development, amenity and culture, and environment. The council has 55 elected members. Elections are held every five years and are by single transferable vote. The head of the council has the title of Mayor. The county administration is headed by a Chief Executive, Tim Lucey. The county seat is Cork. History Originally meetings of Cork County Council were held in the back portion of the top floor of Cork Courthouse. By the 1950s these premises were becoming inadequate and County Hall opened in April 1968. Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire (; born 8 February 1989) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork South-Central constituency since the 2016 general election. Ó Laoghaire is from Togher, Cork. He attended University College Cork and graduated with a law degree. While in UCC, he joined Sinn Féin's youth wing Ógra Shinn Féin, eventually taking a year out to work as an organiser for Ógra. He then worked as a parliamentary assistant for Sinn Féin politicians David Cullinane, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh and Sandra McLellan. While working as McLellan's parliamentary assistant, he ran in the 2014 Cork County Council election, and was elected, serving as a member of Cork County Council from 2014 to 2016. Gerard Murphy (politician)
Gerard Murphy (born 25 March 1951) is an Irish Fine Gael politician who has served as a Cork County Councillor since May 2009. He previously served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork North-West constituency from 2002 to 2007. Murphy was elected to the 29th Dail at the 2002 general election, ousting his Fine Gael running-mate, three-term TD Michael Creed. He was Fine Gael's deputy spokesperson on Justice. He was previously a member of Cork County Council, to which he was elected in 1991. He lost his seat at the 2007 general election to his running-mate Michael Creed. Pat Buckley (born 10 February 1969) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork East constituency since the 2016 general election. He was a member of Cork County Council from 2014 to 2016. Personal life He is a native of Midleton, County Cork. Buckley is married to Sandra and they have two children. Before entering politics Buckley made a living in construction work. His father had been a stonemason in the Midleton area. Between 2002 and 2003, Buckley lost two brothers, Mark (30) and James (22) to suicide. This prompted him to become an active mental health, wellness and suicide prevention campaigner and he has spoken about his experience many times. Michael Ahern (born 20 January 1949) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil politician who served as a Minister of State from 1992 to 1993 and from 2002 to 2008. Des O'Grady
Desmond O'Grady (born 1953) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played as a left wing-back at senior level for the Cork county team. Born in Togher, Cork, O'Grady first played competitive football during his youth. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-one when he first linked up with the Cork under-21 team. He made his senior debut during the 1977 championship. O'Grady was a regular member of the team for just one season. He was a Munster runner-up on one occasion.
