2014 1000 Guineas
The 2014 1000 Guineas Stakes was a horse race held at Newmarket Racecourse on Sunday 4 May 2014. It was the 201st running of the 1000 Guineas. The winner was the Ballymore Thoroughbred's Miss France, an Irish-bred bay filly trained at Chantilly by André Fabre and ridden by Maxime Guyon. Miss France's victory was the first in the race for her owner, trainer and jockey. The contenders The race attracted a field of seventeen runners, thirteen trained in the United Kingdom, two in Ireland and two in France. The favourite was the Aidan O'Brien-trained Tapestry, who had won the Debutante Stakes and finished second in the Moyglare Stud Stakes in 2013. She was accompanied by her stable companion Bracelet, the winner of the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes. 1000 Guineas Stakes
The 1000 Guineas Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old fillies. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late April or early May on the Sunday following the 2000 Guineas Stakes. It is the second of Britain's five Classic races, and the first of two restricted to fillies. It can also serve as the opening leg of the Fillies' Triple Crown, followed by the Oaks and the St Leger, but the feat of winning all three is rarely attempted. The Nell Gwyn Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old fillies. It is run over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres) on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket in mid-April. History The event was established in 1961, and it was initially called the Spring Fillies' Stakes. The first running was won by Verbena. The race was renamed the Nell Gwyn Stakes in 1962. It was named after Nell Gwyn (1650–87), a long-time mistress of King Charles II. The Nell Gwyn Stakes can serve as a trial for various fillies' Classics in Europe. The Lowther Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in Great Britain open to two-year-old fillies. It is run at York over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August. History A different event called the Lowther Stakes, a middle-distance race open to horses aged three or older, used to be contested at Newmarket. Its winners included Bay Ronald (1896), Bayardo (1909) and Gay Crusader (1917). The present version is named in memory of Hugh Lowther (1857–1944), the 5th Earl of Lonsdale. Rizeena
Rizeena (foaled 24 March 2011) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old she won the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, before going on to win the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes later in the year, and in 2014 she won the Coronation Stakes. She is owned by Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum and trained by Clive Brittain. Background Rizeena is a bay filly bred by Roundhill Stud and foaled on 24 March 2011. She was sired by Iffraaj, who won the Group 2 Park Stakes twice and the Lennox Stakes once, as well as finishing second in the 2006 July Cup. Along with Rizeena, he has also sired Benvenue, Chriselliam, Hot Streak and Wootton Bassett. Rizeena's dam is Serena's Storm, a race-winning daughter of Statue of Liberty. The Prix Robert Papin is a Group 2 flat horse race in France open to two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at Chantilly over a distance of 1,200 metres (about 6 furlongs), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July. History The event was established in 1892, and it was originally called the Omnium de Deux Ans. It was initially run over 1,100 metres, and was extended to 1,200 metres in 1903. For a period it was held in early August, and it was one of France's first two-year-old races of the season. It reverted to 1,100 metres in 1907, and from this point juveniles could be raced earlier in the year. The Omnium de Deux Ans was the country's richest race for two-year-olds until 1914. Vorda
Vorda (30 March 2011 – 14 July 2022) was a French Thoroughbred racehorse and prospective broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from April 2013 until October 2014 she won four of her eleven races. After being bought cheaply as a yearling she was one of the best juvenile fillies in Europe in 2013. In France she won the Prix La Flèche and the Prix Robert Papin as well as finishing second in the Prix Morny before being sent to England to record her biggest victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes. She failed to win as a three-year-old but ran well in several major races before being retired at the end of the season. Background Vorda was a bay mare with a white star bred in France by S R L Edy. Her sire, the Kentucky-bred Orpen, raced for the Coolmore Stud, recording his biggest victory in the 1998 Prix Morny. The race was previously held on the second day of Newmarket's three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting, the day before the Cambridgeshire Handicap, but was moved to a fixture a week later in 2014.
