2013 Sporting Kansas City Season
The 2013 Sporting Kansas City season was the eighteenth season of the team's existence in Major League Soccer and the third year played under the Sporting Kansas City moniker. Sporting Kansas City entered the season as the defending U.S. Open Cup champions and as back-to-back Eastern Conference Regular Season Champions. By winning the 2012 U.S. Open Cup, they were qualified for the 2013–14 CONCACAF Champions League for the first time in franchise history. Ivy Funds became the club's kit sponsor, a first for the franchise. Sporting Kansas City qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the 12th time in the team's 18-year history and third straight season, moving into a three-way tie for fourth most MLS Cup Playoff appearances with the Chicago Fire and FC Dallas, trailing only the Colorado Rapids (13), New York Red Bulls (14), and Los Angeles Galaxy (15). Sporting Kansas City, often shortened to Sporting KC, is an American men's professional Association football, soccer club based in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Homegrown Player Rule (Major League Soccer)
The Homegrown Player Rule is a Major League Soccer program that allows MLS teams to sign local players from their own development academies directly to MLS first team rosters. Before the creation of the rule in 2008, every player entering Major League Soccer would have to be assigned through one of the existing MLS player allocation processes, such as the MLS SuperDraft. MLS roster rules allow a team to sign players to contracts similar to Generation adidas contracts, which do not count against the MLS salary budget and may earn a much higher salary than the league minimum. MLS has since removed this wording from the roster rules. That means homegrown players will not count against the salary budget only if they are registered using supplemental roster slots, but will still count against the salary budget if they are registered using senior roster slots. Houston Dynamo FC (formerly officially, but still commonly, called the Houston Dynamo) is an American professional soccer club based in Houston. The Dynamo compete in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Western Conference. Established on December 15, 2005, the club was founded after their former owners relocated the San Jose Earthquakes' players and staff to Houston following the 2005 season. The New England Revolution is an American professional soccer club based in the Greater Boston area that competes in Major League Soccer (MLS), in the Eastern Conference of the league.
