The Pitcairn Islands (; Pitkern: '), officially the Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands, is a group of four volcanic islands in the southern Pacific Ocean that form the sole British Overseas Territory in the Pacific Ocean. The four islands—Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno—are scattered across several hundred miles of ocean and have a combined land area of about . Henderson Island accounts for 86% of the land area, but only Pitcairn Island is inhabited. The islands nearest to the Pitcairn Islands are Mangareva (of French Polynesia) at 688 km to the west and Easter Island at 1,929 km to the east. Shawn Christian (mayor)
Shawn Brent Christian (born 14 September 1975) is a Pitcairnese politician, who served as Mayor of the Pitcairn Islands between 2014 and 2019. He previously served in prison after being convicted of child rape. Biography Christian was born to Steve Christian and Olive Jal Brown, and was named after Shawn Branigan, the son of friends of his parents. He is a patrilineal descendant of Fletcher Christian. The Pitcairn Islands, a group of islands in the southern Pacific Ocean, are the last remaining British Overseas Territory in Oceania. Settled by mutineers from the in 1790, the island was effectively sovereign until 1898, when it was annexed by the United Kingdom and placed under the jurisdiction of the governor of Fiji. When Fiji became independent in 1970, Pitcairn Island was placed under the authority of the British high commissioner (ambassador) to New Zealand. In practice, partly due to its isolation, Pitcairn has effectively had internal self-government throughout this period. From 1790 to 1829, the local head of government was known simply as the leader. They had a president from 1832 to 1838, and a magistrate from that time until 1999, except for an eleven-year gap from 1893 to 1904, when the chief official was the president of the Council. Brenda Christian
Brenda Vera Amelia Lupton-Christian (born February 25, 1953) is a political figure from the Pacific territory of the Pitcairn Islands. When her brother Steve Christian was removed from the office of mayor following the 2004 Pitcairn child sexual abuse trial, she served as interim mayor of the islands. Biography Christian was born and raised on Pitcairn and is the daughter of former island political leader Ivan Christian and his wife Verna Carlene "Dobrey" Young. She lived in the United Kingdom for a time, but returned to the island around 1999 and has served as the island's sole police officer. Except for 2003, she has been a member of the Island Council continuously since 2000. Island Council (Pitcairn)
The Island Council is the legislature of the Pitcairn Islands. Structure The Council has ten members, seven (five Councillors, the Mayor, and the Deputy Mayor) of whom are elected by popular vote and are the only members that are allowed to vote during any Council meeting. The other three are ''ex-officio'' members: the Administrator (who serves as both the head of government and the representative of the Governor of the Pitcairn Islands), the Governor, and the Deputy Governor. The Councillors and the Deputy Mayor all serve two year terms. The Mayor is elected for three years and is eligible to serve a second term in office, whilst the Administrator is appointed by the Governor for an indefinite term. Simon Young (mayor)
Simon Young (born 1965) is an English-born Pitcairnese politician. He is currently Mayor of Pitcairn, the first non-native Pitcairn Islander to hold the position. He previously served as Deputy Mayor from 2009 to 2013. Biography Originally from Pickering in North Yorkshire, Young served in the Royal Air Force for ten years. He visited Pitcairn in 1992 and returned permanently in 1999 with his American wife Shirley, becoming the first people with no connection to the island to be naturalised. He is editor of the island newspaper ''The Pitcairn Miscellany'', and the island's conservation officer.
