2013 Missouri's 8th Congressional District Special Election
A special election for Missouri's 8th congressional district was held on June 4, 2013, following the resignation of Jo Ann Emerson on January 22, 2013, to head the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. The Republican and Democratic parties selected their own nominees without a primary. The deadline to request an absentee ballot for the special election was May 29, 2013. A televised candidate's forum took place on May 27, 2013, at Southeast Missouri State University-River Campus; all party candidates participated while the write-in candidate did not attend. In the general election on June 4, 2013, Republican Jason Smith received 67.1% of the vote, beating Democrat Steve Hodges (27.4%), Constitutional Doug Enyart (3.6%), and Libertarian Bill Slantz (1.5%). Missouri's 8th Congressional District
Missouri's 8th congressional district is one of 435 congressional districts in the United States and one of eight congressional districts in the state of Missouri. The district encompasses rural Southeast Missouri and South Central Missouri as well as some counties in Southwest Missouri. The district stretches from the Bootheel in the south to the St. Louis southern exurbs of Festus, Hillsboro, and surrounding areas in the Lead Belt; it ranges in the east to counties along the Mississippi River and in the west to counties along the Ozark Plateau near Branson. The district's largest city is Cape Girardeau. A predominantly rural district, the district votes strongly Republican for national offices. In 2004, President George W. Bush received 63% of the vote in the district over U.S. Senator John Kerry ( D-Massachusetts) who clinched 36%. Clint Tracy
Clinton "Clint" Tracy (born January 1, 1974) is a state representative currently serving his first term in the Missouri House of Representatives. He succeeded the seat held by former State Representative Mary Kasten (R-Cape Girardeau) who retired after filling out the remainder of the term of former State Representative Nathan Cooper (R-Cape Girardeau). Cooper pleaded guilty to immigration fraud in August 2007 and is subsequently in prison.
