Events January *6 January – It is reported that Seán Gallagher, a former candidate in the 2011 Irish presidential election is launching legal proceedings against RTÉ over an incident in its ''Frontline'' Presidential Debate in which a tweet was wrongly attributed to the official Twitter account of the Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness. *7 January – Debut of TV3's first self-produced drama, '' Deception'', set on a post-Celtic Tiger housing estate in Galway. *30 January – Former Channel 5 Director of Programmes Jeff Ford has been hired by TV3 to become their new Director of Content, a position he will take up in February. *31 January – Figures published by TAM Ireland/Nielsen indicate viewers in Ireland watched an average of 3.35 hours of television per day (25 hours a week) in 2012. Television In Ireland
Television in the Republic of Ireland is available through a variety of platforms. The digital terrestrial television service is known as Saorview and is the primary source of broadcast television since analogue transmissions ended on 24 October 2012. Digital satellite (from Sky Ireland, Saorsat and other European satellite service providers are available) and digital cable (from Virgin Media Ireland) are also widely used. The Irish satellite fill-in service (Saorsat) is via Ka-Sat using the Irish KA band spot and has been available since June 2011. While many people receive their television via Saorview, which is broadcast by 2RN, more than half subscribe to multichannel television networks. The biggest single multichannel television network in Ireland is Sky Ireland, which broadcasts digital satellite television services. Alan Shatter
Alan Joseph Shatter (born 14 February 1951) is an Irish lawyer, author and former Fine Gael politician who served as Minister for Justice and Equality and Minister for Defence from 2011 to 2014. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin South constituency from 1981 to 2002 and from 2007 to 2016. He ended his membership of Fine Gael in early 2018. His most recent books are ''Life is a Funny Business'' (2017) and ''Frenzy and Betrayal: The Anatomy of a Political Assassination'' (2019). The Voice Of Ireland
''The Voice of Ireland'' is the Irish edition of the international TV franchise '' The Voice'', a reality singing competition created by media tycoon John de Mol. The first series began airing from 8 January 2012 on RTÉ One. The coaches originally were Bressie, Sharon Corr, Kian Egan and Brian Kennedy. Kennedy left after the first series and was replaced by Jamelia. After the second series, Corr quit the show owing to other commitments and was replaced by Dolores O'Riordan. Following series 3, Dolores and Jamelia quit. The coaches for series 4 were Bressie, Una Healy, Kian Egan and Rachel Stevens. The show was hosted by Kathryn Thomas and co-hosted by Eoghan McDermott, who also presented backstage show '' The Voice After Party'' in Series 3. The Voice Of Ireland (series 2)
''The Voice of Ireland'' is an Irish reality talent show. The second series began airing on 6 January 2013 on RTÉ One. Bressie, Kian Egan and Sharon Corr return as coaches while Jamelia replaces Brian Kennedy, who left the show after the first series. This is the final series to feature Sharon Corr, who is being replaced by Dolores O'Riordan in the next series. Kathryn Thomas returns to present the main show, while Eoghan McDermott returns to co-present and Stephen Byrne covers the backstage V-Reporting. The winner of the second series was Keith Hanley from Team Jamelia. Auditions for this series took place at the end of 2012. The Blind auditions took place on 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 October at The Helix. A change this season is that of, if a coach has a full team of 12, they are still able to press their button and state their case as to why the artist should pick them. Keith Hanley
Keith Hanley (born 15 August 1993) is an Irish singer from Charleville, County Cork and the winner of ''The Voice of Ireland'' series 2 on 28 April 2013. Hanley's coach on the show was R&B singer Jamelia who was making her debut season on the show. He won a recording contract with Universal Music after he performed his winning song " Beggin'". He also performed 'Jigsaw' with Ryan Sheridan that night. Career 2013: ''The Voice of Ireland'' Hanley auditioned for The Voice of Ireland in 2012, singing Beyoncé's "Listen" at the blind auditions. Bresie and Jamelia turned around but Hanley ultimately chose Jamelia as his coach. During the battle rounds, Hanley was pitted against Niamh Armstrong; they sang "Beneath Your Beautiful" after which Jamelia decided to send Hanley through to the live shows. ''Tonight with Vincent Browne'', (formerly ''Nightly News with Vincent Browne''), was a news analysis, current affairs and politics programme which was broadcast on Ireland's TV3 from 2007 to July 2017. Its time on air coincided with the premierships of Brian Cowen and Enda Kenny, bookended by the conclusion of Bertie Ahern's premiership and the initial weeks of Leo Varadkar's. ''The Tonight Show'', hosted by Ivan Yates (initially) and Matt Cooper, replaced it in mid-September 2017. It was moderated by Vincent Browne — a journalist noted for his rather acerbic style, with ''The Guardian'' describing him as "Ireland's Jeremy Paxman". Michael Lowry
Michael Lowry (born 13 March 1953) is an Irish Independent politician who has served as a Teachta Dála (TD) since 1987, currently for the Tipperary constituency. He previously served as Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications from 1994 to 1996 and Chairman of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party from 1993 to 1994. Lowry is a former Chairman of the Fine Gael party and was Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications between 1994 and 1996. He resigned from his ministry in some controversy. Fine Gael barred him from standing for the party again. Thereafter he ran as an Independent candidate and has maintained his seat in the Dáil ever since. Lowry Tapes
The Lowry Tapes refers to a 2013 scandal in Ireland involving the Tipperary North TD Michael Lowry, formerly a Fine Gael government minister. They feature a telephone conversation between Lowry and the land agent Kevin Phelan. The conversation featured foul language and reference to an undeclared payment of €250,000. It is believed to date from 30 September 2004 and raised uncertainty over whether Lowry had misled the Moriarty Tribunal which had previously investigated him. Much of the controversy focused on the following comments by Lowry: Journalist Michael Clifford, writing in the '' Irish Examiner'', drew comparisons between the response - or lack thereof - from the Irish government and the British government's past responses to tamer crimes such as Jeffrey Archer's perjury and Chris Huhne's perverting the course of justice. Ballymount
Ballymount (), is a locality on the south side of Dublin, near the mainly residential areas of Walkinstown to the east, Tallaght to the west and Greenhills to the south. Ballymount is accessed by a number of public bus routes from Dublin city centre, and via the Red Cow Stop on the Red Luas Line, and it houses one of the largest industrial zones in Ireland. Area Ballymount is divided by the M50 motorway. On the west side of the divide is the more residential area of Kingswood, and most of the industrial land is on the east. Pat Rabbitte (born 18 May 1949) is an Irish former Labour Party politician who served as Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources from 2011 to 2014, Leader of the Labour Party from 2002 to 2007 and a Minister of State from 1994 to 1997. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin South-West constituency from 1989 to 2016.
