Javelin Throw
The javelin throw is a track and field event where the javelin, a spear about in length, is thrown. The javelin thrower gains momentum by running within a predetermined area. Javelin throwing is an event of both the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. History The javelin throw was added to the Ancient Olympic Games as part of the pentathlon in 708 BC. It included two events, one for distance and the other for accuracy in hitting a target. The javelin was thrown with the aid of a thong ('' ankyle'' in Greek) that was wound around the middle of the shaft. Athletes held the javelin by the ''ankyle'', and when they released the shaft, the unwinding of the thong gave the javelin a spiral trajectory. Throwing javelin-like poles into targets was revived in Germany and Sweden in the early 1870s. Ntombizanele Situ (19 January 1971 – 1 November 2023), better known as Zanele Situ, was a South African Paralympian athlete competing mainly in category F54 throwing events. Specialising in the javelin throw, Situ was a two-time gold medalist at both the Paralympics and the IPC Athletics World Championships and was the first female South African black athlete to win a Paralympic gold medal. Early life Ntombizanele Situ was born in Kokstad, South Africa on 19 January 1971. At the age of twelve she experienced weakness in her legs which resulted in an inability to walk. Medical tests discovered a tuberculosis infection in her spine which resulted in Situ entering a two-year semi-coma, and was left with paralysis from the fourth vertebra down, leaving her requiring the use of a wheelchair. Hania Aidi ( ar, هنية العايدي; born 10 December 1977) is a Paralympian athlete from Tunisia competing mainly in category F54 javelin throw events. Aidi has competed at four consecutive Summer Paralympics, winning silver medals at three of the Games. Esther Rivera Robles (born 30 July 1964 in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora) is a Mexican Paralympian Track and field, athlete competing mainly in javelin events. Robles was the gold medalist in the Women's F33/34/52/53 javelin in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens. She attempted to defend this title in Beijing in 2008 Summer Paralympics, 2008 but was ultimately unsuccessful coming away with nothing. Yukiko Kato was a Japanese writer. She is best known for writing , which won the 1982 Akutagawa Prize. Biography Kato was born Yukiko Shiraki in Sapporo, Japan on September 26, 1936. Her father was a university professor from Tokyo; he and Kato's mother were in Sapporo for work. The family lived in Beijing from 1941 to 1947. They returned to Tokyo after World War II. Kato returned to Hokkaido to attend university, and graduated with an agriculture degree from Hokkaido University in 1959.
